Forney in the foreground. Signs on the Seventh Street side of the building include "J. Walker., Cover illustration is a lithograph showing a group of comically-portrayed men in top hats and suits surrounding a man reading the Public Leder in front of the office of the newspaper at 300 Chestnut Street. Description: View looking northeast from Dock Street showing Girard National Bank, formerly the First Bank of the United States (built 1795-1797, Samuel Blodgett, architect), at 116-120 South Third Street. The bank, operated by Stephen Girard as Girard's Bank from 1812-1831, was chartered by the state in 1832 as the Girard National Bank.
