Title: Dr. George Stuart's botanical syrup and vegetable pills, the greatest family medicine in the world Laboratory no. 254, Race St. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing an exterior view of the three-and-one-half story storefront on the 700 block of Race Street bordered by paragraphs of advertising text, including notice of prices that ranged from 25 cents to one dollar per box or bottle. Signage above the large central showcase window lists several diseases and ailments cured by "Dr. G. Stuart's Syrup and Vegetable Pills." Infirmities include consumption, dysentery, chills and fevers, piles, colds, coughs, bronchitis, "tumours," "erysipelas," neuralgia, and "general and nervous debility &c. &c." Shadowy views of branches, leaves, and decanters are visible in the window. Several male character types, of different ages, class, and ethnicity, holding banners inscribed with testimonials, gather around laborers loading a "Botanical [Syr]up" crate onto a horse-drawn wagon in front of the store. Figures include a dandy, Quaker, father and son, and a Native American, many of whom also hold bottles. The testimonials cite the customer's supplying of certificates of cure and their attesting to Dr. Stuart's syrup and pills as cures for cancer, dyspepsia, scrofula, and colds. Description: Advertisement containing a decorative border surrounding an exterior view of the patent medicine shop operated by C. M. Jackson. The four-story building, adjacent a walled courtyard, contains an "1855" date marker; lettering on the roof spelling "C.M. Description: Views looking east, one from Third Street, at the rear elevation of the fire-ravaged Jayne building with ice hanging from its exterior. One of the images includes a partial view of the cast iron front of 117 South Third Street in the foreground. Dr. David Jayne, a chemist and Philadelphia manufacturer of patent medicines, moved into an eight story building at 84-86 Chestnut Street (i.e., 242-244 Chestnut Street), between 2nd and 3rd Streets in 1850, after it was completed after designs by William J. Johnston and Thomas Ustick Walter. His business occupied the building until his death in 1866. He served as the chief photographer for the U.S. Army Medical Museum in 1865 and replaced Timothy O'Sullivan on George M. Wheeler's survey of the territories west of the 100th meridian in 1872. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.

Description: Folio volume of panoramic views of businesses on the 200-900 blocks of Chestnut Street and corresponding pages of advertisements. Also contains a preface, which details that inclusion in the directory required subscription to or purchase of the volume; the intention to "issue the Panoramic View annually"; and the publisher's endeavor to correct all lettering errors "upon the publication of the second edition." Volume also includes interspersed full-, half- and, one-third-page advertisements for business subscribers tenanting, as well as not located on Chestnut Street. Publisher issued only the 1851 directory., Predominantly depicted and promoted businesses include carpet dealers; confectioneries; daguerreotypists; druggists and patent medicine dealers; engravers, printers, and publishers; hotels; jewelers; millineries and clothiers; musical instrument dealers; and tailors. Plates also show the State House, Congress Hall, City Hall, Barnum's Museum, and residences. Full-, half- and one-third page advertisements advertise a variety of businesses, including patent medicines, artificial limbs, essence of coffee, marble manufacturers, and printers and publishers.
