Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. The first Philadelphia Gas Works, completed in 1834 after the designs of engineer Samuel V. Merrick is visible on the opposite block. His son (only) Thomas then occupied the house where he died, on Tuesday morning, Feby 12th 1856. The house is remarkable from the "pent" roof over the front door - where the second or upper door appears in the picture there was a window similar to that remaining. Title: [Broad Street Station fire, Philadelphia, June 12, 1923]
Description: View of the interior of the burnt out train shed during the fire of June 11-13, 1923. Depicts several workers, including African Americans, building a new train platform and clearing debris from the tracks near the destroyed row of gates. Slightly damaged train cars and engines trapped by the fire, including "Al G. Barnes Wild Animal Circus," rest on the tracks. Large burnt pieces of the destroyed ceiling lay under a "Baggage Claim" sign. The Broad Street Station fire, started Monday, June 11, 1923 by a short circuited cable, was at the time considered one of the worst fires in the city's history with an estimated $1,500,000 worth of damage. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Contents also include die-cuts of fans, horse shoes, a spoon, a flamingo, one-quarter moon, a woman’s leg, and a bird as a cover for a H. O. Neill & Co. illustrated hat catalog. Cards often depict sentimental and genre imagery including cupids, butterflies, flowers, vases and baskets; religious, historical and Asian-themed scenes, figures and/or decor; seasonal landscape views; women, children, and costumed figures; animals, including birds, chicks, dogs, and cats; and fruit. Other imagery includes two witches flying on brooms holding a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" banner; London printer William Dickes series of women in native costume from Switzerland, Russia, and Norway; a holiday card that opens to a sledding scene of children holding letters spelling "Merry Christmas"; and a Valentine Day card showing a letter slot filled with valentines. Scrapbook also contains watercolors and drawings, trade cards, programs, menus, invitations, ribbons, photographs, etchings, newspaper clippings, including an announcement of the wedding of Adelaide Watson, and a post card from "cousin Will." Trade cards advertise businesses, including J. E. Caldwell & Co., Stephen F. Whitman & Son, P. Fleischner & Co., Sharpless & Sons, F. T. Howell & Co., A. Ripka & Bro., J. H. Descended from Commodore William Bainbridge and Thomas Harris, the first surgeon-general of the United States Navy, Harris and her family resided in Philadelphia by 1866. In 1893, she married John L. Wilson (b. 1850), later treasurer of Coal Land Corporation and the couple resided in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. Harris was active in the Sedgely Club and often attended and held card parties, teas, and luncheons noted in the local press. Harris spent her later years residing in Bryn Mawr where she died circa 1948.

Contents include views of Tacony, Cobb’s, Chester, and Pennypack Creeks; Germantown; Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon; Media, Dauphin, and Hamburg, Pa.; and Dutchess County and Newburgh, N.Y. Views also show estates, including S. H. Lloyd Garden on School House Lane and the W.C. Kent residence (Germantown), Mount Pleasant (Fairmount Park), Henry W. Sargent’s estate (Wodenthe) in Fishkill on the Hudson, and Presqu’ile (built 1813, Dutchess County, N.Y.); churches, including St. Timothy’s (built 1862, Roxborough) and St. Luke’s (Matteawan, Beacon, N.Y.); bridges, including the Norristown Railroad Bridge, Ridge Avenue Bridge, and the P.R.R. St. Luke's image also shows parishioners entering the church., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: Arthur Power Dudden collection of railroad, steamboat, and omnibus passes, 1865-1876
Description: The collection consists of forty-two transportation passes, one telegraph pass, two membership cards, a business card, and two calling cards (Edward Hoopes, Philadelphia; and J. Knight). The passes were all issued to members of the Charles J. Clarke family and date from 1865 to 1876. Clarke was the principal of Clarke and Company, an agency that facilitated transfer of freight between lines. He is probably most remembered for being a founding member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, owners of the dam that failed in 1889, causing the Johnstown Flood., Collected by Arthur Power Dudden, professor of history and American studies at Bryn Mawr College. Dudden was born on Oct. 26, 1921. He graduated with a B.A. from Wayne State University in 1942, then served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Michigan, obtaining a Ph.D. in history in 1950. He joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College that same year, and became a full professor in 1965. He retired from Bryn Mawr in 1992. Dudden authored 9 books, and was actively involved in several professional associations. He died on Oct. 14, 2009.
