Description: Disaster scene showing the "Picnic Train Tragedy", the worst rail disaster at that time. Shows the burning wreck near Ambler, Pa. from the collision of North Pennsylvania excursion trains "Shakamoxon," departed from the Cohocksink depot, and "Aramingo" departed from the Wissahickon station. Burning tangled engines and train cars pile up on the single track line in the middle of farmland. Rear cars remain unscathed and a horse pulling a buggy rears up as it approaches the wreck site. Bodies lay near an overturned car in the foreground. One train carried hundreds of children from St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Sunday School in Philadelphia. The crash occurred due to an attempt by the "Shakamoxon" engineer to make up time for its late departure. It collided with the regularly scheduled Aramingo, before arriving at a siding pass. The boilers of the trains collided and caused an explosion that decimated the front cars, but left the rear cars intact. Title: Scenery on the Pennsylvania Railroad Album
Description: Album of photographs documenting the Philadelphia, Middle, and Pittsburgh divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad, incorporated in 1846. The consolidated company sought to build a trunk route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh through the Allegheny mountains in order to compete with the Erie Canal for freight traffic. In 1854, rail passage through the Alleghenies via the "Horse Shoe Curve" was achieved and spurred the establishment and growth of the several towns depicted along the route.

Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". His son (only) Thomas then occupied the house where he died, on Tuesday morning, Feby 12th 1856. Title: [Broad Street Station fire, Philadelphia, June 12, 1923]
Description: View of the interior of the burnt out train shed during the fire of June 11-13, 1923. Depicts several workers, including African Americans, building a new train platform and clearing debris from the tracks near the destroyed row of gates. Slightly damaged train cars and engines trapped by the fire, including "Al G. Barnes Wild Animal Circus," rest on the tracks. Large burnt pieces of the destroyed ceiling lay under a "Baggage Claim" sign. The Broad Street Station fire, started Monday, June 11, 1923 by a short circuited cable, was at the time considered one of the worst fires in the city's history with an estimated $1,500,000 worth of damage. Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." Contents include views of Tacony, Cobb’s, Chester, and Pennypack Creeks; Germantown; Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon; Media, Dauphin, and Hamburg, Pa.; and Dutchess County and Newburgh, N.Y. Views also show estates, including S. H. Lloyd Garden on School House Lane and the W.C. Kent residence (Germantown), Mount Pleasant (Fairmount Park), Henry W. Sargent’s estate (Wodenthe) in Fishkill on the Hudson, and Presqu’ile (built 1813, Dutchess County, N.Y.); churches, including St. Timothy’s (built 1862, Roxborough) and St. Luke’s (Matteawan, Beacon, N.Y.); bridges, including the Norristown Railroad Bridge, Ridge Avenue Bridge, and the P.R.R. Bridge over Hamburg; Humphrey Yearsley’s Mill (built 1792, near Media); Delaware Water Gap; Glen Mills; St. Denning’s Point; waterfalls; cascades; wooded paths; woodlands; creek beds; and posed male and female figures in entryways, gardens, and near trees and waterfalls. St. Luke's image also shows parishioners entering the church., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869.
