- Disaster scene showing the "Picnic Train Tragedy", the worst rail disaster at that time. Shows the burning wreck near Ambler, Pa. from the collision of North Pennsylvania excursion trains "Shakamoxon," departed from the Cohocksink depot, and "Aramingo" departed from the Wissahickon station. Burning tangled engines and train cars pile up on the single track line in the middle of farmland. Rear cars remain unscathed and a horse pulling a buggy rears up as it approaches the wreck site. Bodies lay near an overturned car in the foreground. One train carried hundreds of children from St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Sunday School in Philadelphia. The crash occurred due to an attempt by the "Shakamoxon" engineer to make up time for its late departure. It collided with the regularly scheduled Aramingo, before arriving at a siding pass. The boilers of the trains collided and caused an explosion that decimated the front cars, but left the rear cars intact. - Bird's eye view looking west from the Schuylkill River toward the exhibition grounds in West Fairmount Park. Includes the Reading Railroad depot (in the foreground), the Main Building, Machinery Hall, the Art Gallery (Memorial Hall), Judges Hall, Ladies Pavilion, U.S. Government Buildings, Horticultural Hall, Agricultural Hall, the observatory on George's Hill, the 24th Ward reservoir, the Globe Hotel, and the Pennsylvania Railroad Depot. Also shows a train approaching the Reading Railroad station, the bridge over Lansdown Valley, and smaller exhibition venues, including the Photograph Gallery, City Pavilion, Vienna Bakery and Coffee House, restaurants, state buildings, fountains and monuments. The grounds are lined with trees, bushes, and landscaped paths. Contains the names and dimensions of the major buildings, and a miniature diagram of the view and corresponding key below the image. Key identifies 51 depicted sites. Several of the buildings were built after the designs of Henry Petit, Hermann Schwarzmann, and Joseph Wilson. In the foreground, bodies lay within the wreckage as rescuers rush in buckets of water. Others attempt to catch individuals jumping from a burning train car in the rear, carry children's bodies on a gurney, and comfort the grieving. In the lower left, a man wipes his face with a handkerchief as he stands over a legless body on a mattress. Nearby another man holds a body in his arms. Also contains the names of "The Killed" and "The Wounded" printed below the image as well as notice that "Many of the wounded are in a very precarious condition, and the death of several is hourly looked for." It extends from the Lancaster Turnpike to the Monument Road, and it is intersected by the old Lancaster Road, thus having the advantage of three excellent roads. It also has constant communication of passenger rail road. The elevation is 250 feet above tide, the highest ground within an equal distance of the center of the city, of which it commands a splendid panoramic view. - Description
- Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. Tygert and Penrose Allen about 1889, also operated an office at 2 Chestnut Street. - View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Within the grounds, visitors stroll on the paths between and enter the several exhibition buildings, including the Main Building (center), Restaurant, House of Public Comfort, Carriage and Wagon House, and Poultry House. Agricultural implements, fountains, and shrubbery adorn the grounds. In the background, the cattle sheds, rows of horse stalls, and the Executive Offices line the outskirts of the grounds in back of which trains on the Connecting Railroad and Pennsylvania Rail Railroad tracks travel past. - Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease."
