Title: Henry Miller's concert garden. Nos. 720 & 722 Vine Str. Philadelphia
Description: Sheet music cover containing an interior view of the crowded concert hall and theater operated by Henry Miller beginning circa 1854. Several men and women sit at, and converse and walk among the many tables of the seating area as a number of waiters serve the patrons. A music ensemble plays on a raised platform with guard rails in the left of the image and several people line a small stage in the center rear of the hall where a small performance appears to be happening. To the right of the performance, the stairwell to the upper balcony, lined with people, is visible. Greenery and vinery decorate the hall that includes a glass ceiling and windows, some open, across and adjacent to the balcony. Description: View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Title: Wm C. Rudman’s Philadelphia pale ale on draught, warranted for from all pernicious drugs and alcoholic admixture, Brewery, 121 Green Street, Northern Liberties
Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house. Description: Advertisement utilizing classical figures, Gothic-style architectural details, and vignettes to promote the addition of "Chromolithography" to the Ranstead Place lithographic studio tenanted by Duval 1849 -1855. Iconography includes a scene with two male and two female allegorical figures, including one resting on a lyre; a bas-relief depiction of lithographic artists and printers at work at a press, table, and ink stone; and a female classical figure holding a paint brush, and a portrait print of George Washington. Other pictorial elements include portrait profile vignettes, filigree, and floral ornamentation. The floral details surround the several lines of advertising text. Text promotes the "spacious location," "steam power" press, and types of print work executed by the firm. Title: View of the farm where the murder of the Deering [sic] Family was committed by the fiend Antoine Probst on April 7th 1866
Description: News print showing the farm at Jones Lane in South Philadelphia of the Philadelphia family murdered by their farmhand Anton Probst on April 7, 1866. The victims included Christopher Dearing, aged 38 years; his wife, Julia Dearing, aged 45 years; their son, John Dearing, aged 8 years; their son, Thomas Dearing, aged 6 years; their daughter, Anna Dearing, aged 4 years; their daughter, Emily Dearing, aged 2 years; family friend Elizabeth Dolan, aged 25 years; and fieldhand Cornelius Cary, aged 17 years. Depicts (left to right) "1. The Haystack" where the headless body of the first murdered, field hand Cary, was hidden; "2. The Dwelling" Probst ransacked for money and in which he shaved, changed, napped, and ate after the murder; "3. The Stable" where Probst fed the animals before his departure; and "4. The Barn" where the family was lured one by one, killed, and discovered by neighbors a few days later. Individuals walk the property, including spectators and police, and a cow stands across from two policemen in a field tilled for planting in the foreground. Description: Advertisement showing a bird’s eye view of the factory complex of several buildings and courtyards originally built 1855 between 18th, Fitzwater, 17th, and Catherine streets. Complex includes the L-shaped building at the corner of Fitzwater and Seventeeth streets that displays the sign “Rosengarten & Sons. Established 1822” near the entrance. The building contained the office, packing rooms, and manufacturing rooms for the firm. Several individuals walk on the sidewalk and horse-drawn carts and wagons travel near the street corner. On the Fitzwater block in front of the complex, which also includes a storage shed, stable, and warehouse for the factory, other wagons and carts are parked. Title: Wakefield – The “Hunt,"
Description: Montage of five scenes from a "Hound and Hare Club of Germantown" meet at Wakefield Meadow, part of the estate of Thomas and Sarah Fisher near Germantown. Large central scene shows elegantly attired men, women, and children, a few astride horses, milling on the grounds near the old residence, pond and creek. Surrounding scenes show horsemen galloping on the grounds, over fences, and in front of distant crowds of on-lookers standing in front of the dwelling. Dwelling built circa 1795. The meet involved horsemen acting as "hounds" and "hares" through horns and pieces of paper. The riders were tracked by their fellow mounted clubmen. Description: Advertisement showing the large industrial complex, including warehouses, storage sheds, and a reservoir originally established in 1848 by Powers & Weightman. Several of the buildings contain working smokestacks. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the main entranceway and a number of others are visible within the complex. Train tracks run within and along the periphery of the plant. A locomotive with train cars, horse–drawn freight cars, and free standing freight cars are visible on the tracks. Fenced pasture land is visible in the background. Also contains two titled insets in the lower corners. Title: An accurate sketch from nature, of the exterior and interior of the house no. 39, Nth. Fourth St. Philadelphia, where the atrocious murder of Mrs. Rademacher was committed on the night of the 23d, March 1848, her wounds, and exact position when discovered
Description: Sensational print containing two views of the murder scene of Catherine Rademacher, sister-in-law of lithographer Augustus Kollner. Her husband, Charles L. Rademacher kept a bookstore and medicinal shop on the first floor of the Fourth Street address, and his residence with the Kollner family on the second and third floors. On March 23, 1848, the Rademachers were awakened by an intruder searching their bedroom who beat Rademacher unconscious and slain his wife. A broken knife, resembling a shoemaker's tool, but not the only instrument used in the slaying, was found at the scene. A recently released inmate from Eastern State Penintentiary and German shoemaker, Charles Langfeldt was convicted, and executed on October 20, 1848 for the crime despite his declaration of innocence. Upper view shows the murderer, dressed in black, including a top hat, on the rear shed roof of the red brick residence and store. He approaches an upper floor window with a shutter half open. The lower windows of the building are shuttered and a partial view of a leafless vine climbing an arbor (neighbor's yard) is visible in the left of the image. Lower view shows the bedroom and scene of the crime. The murdered woman, attired in a night dress, lies on the floor, face up, with blood surrounding her upper body. The victim has cut marks on her face, chest, and arm., Her husband lies face down on the bed. His head is positioned near the foot of the mattress. Blood stains his shoulder and the pillows at the head of the bed. Blood splatter is also visible on the wall above and the knob of a door near a dresser in the left corner of the room. Other furniture includes a chair on one side and a night table with wash bowl and pitcher on the other side of the bed. Description: Honorary membership certificate containing firefighting vignettes, scenes, and pictorial elements. Shows the company horse-drawn steam engine, manned by two volunteers, racing down a street; several firefighters drawing the hose carriage while a man runs in the street beside them; and an exterior view of the station house at Ridge Avenue above Wood Street in Spring Garden. The company engine is parked in front. Also contains, at the top of the certificate, a bust portrait of the “Chief Engineer D.M.L” attired in his fire fighter’s hat and coat. Title: Penn sylvania State Agricultural Society [diploma]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and graphic elements related to agriculture. Vignettes at the bottom of the print show clusters of farm animals, including cows, pigs, and fowl; a man providing a bowl of feed to a couple of horses with a foul in a fenced pasture in front of a house; and a farmer plowing his field. Graphic elements in the upper corners include farm implements, tools, and equipment, including shovels, pitchforks, sickles, rakes, and a grinding implement. Description: Advertisement showing the Schweitzer and Grim brewery complex on the 1100 block of Columbia (i.e., Cecil B. Moore) Avenue. Complex includes a three and half–story red brick office building and shop with two adjacent entrances. A man enters one of the entrances, and at the other, two men shake hands while a couple approaches the walled entryway to an addition attached to the rear of the office. The addition also contains a roofed porch area. To the left, a two-horse team is visible at the opening of a passage in the wall that spreads between the brew house (left) and addition (right).
