Description: Advertisement showing the rolling iron mill established by Algernon and Percival Roberts in 1852 below Manayunk on the west bank of the Schuylkill. Title: Harrison's Handkerchief Extracts Apollos W. Harrison No. 10 South 7th Street Philadelphia
Description: Beautiful, elaborate advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer showing a ballroom scene set within a monument designed as a stage surrounded by floral ornaments. Shows couples attired in evening wear introducing themselves, conversing, and dancing in the ballroom. Two women hold fans. Chandelier lampposts and red drapery frame the scene. Two archways showing vistas to outdoor sceneries of trees and urns of greenery flank the monument. Loose, bundled, and cornucopias of flowers, encase the monument. Also contains two poles entwined with banners on the outer sides. Banners are inscribed with the names of scented flowers, including camellia, lilac, magnolia, tea rose, sweet clover, patchouli, and musk. Title: Decatur Fire Company of Frankford
Description: Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters rushing a steam engine marked with the company motto down a city street past the Odd Fellows Hall, Frankford; a steam engine parked at the company fire station on Church Street; and fire fighters surrounded by spectators battling a fire of the Frogmore Mills cotton factory, Frankford. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hose, a ladder, an axe, a trumpet and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. A small oval portrait of Commodore Stephen Decatur in a laurel wreath frame above intertwined American flags and the company motto "Ever Prompt to a Call" adorns the top. Also contains eagles, the company number "21," and the institution and incorporation dates (1803 and 1842, respectively). Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 21 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 5 men, 2 women, 2 boys and a girl socializing. The men wear suits, with light colored pants, vests, and dark bow ties, and hold hats, canes, and an overcoat. One man wears a jacket with tails. The boys wear military inspired suits, a cape, and cap and hold an overcoat. The girl wears a jacket, skirt, a petticoat and a cap. The women wear dresses with hoop skirts that are adorned with lace and bowties. One also wears a bonnet and jacket and the other wears gloves and holds a handkerchief. Furnishings include a sofa, chair, side table, patterned carpeting, and a fireplace mantle adorned with candelabras. Lower panel shows 9 men, a woman, and a boy in front of a snow-covered riverbank and residence in the background. Most of the men wear overcoats, striped or patterned trousers, and carry canes. Title: Roussel's premium perfumery Manufactured by X. Bazin, successor to E. Roussel. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement containing advertising text surrounded by an ornate flowery border. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Bazin served as the lab director for perfumer Eugene Roussel from circa 1840 to circa 1849 when he assumed proprietorship of the business. Bazin continued to use Roussel's name until circa 1853. Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the two-level dry goods store containing a parquet floor and Corinthian columns, and busy with customers at 809-811 Chestnut Street. Men and women patrons mill around and stop at the display counters, one centrally located and the other against the wall. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. A couple with a child talks with a female clerk at the large C-shaped central counter lined with stools that encloses an island of shelves displaying dry goods. Title: Washington and Lafayette Benefical Society Incorporated April 12th 1825
Description: Membership certificate containing a scene showing the December 31, 1777 meeting between Marquis De Lafayette and General Washington during the American Revolution. On the banks of the Delaware River, under the watch of guards, Washington attended by his officers extends his hand to the young Franch Major General who is accompanied by his two officers. The men stand in front of a row of tents beside which a band of uniformed militia stand near an armed frontiersman and Native American witnessing the event. In the background, militia troops drill and ships sail on the Delaware. Also contains a vignette showing a society member in his sick bed attended by his wife and fellow members. The seated men talk and sit at a table playing cards as the ailing man's son, holds a hoop, and cries at the foot of the bed. Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. Description: View of the Episcopal church built 1856-1857 at 711-721 Catharine Street. Church property contains side courtyards enclosed by iron gates. Also show partial views of neighboring buildings and street and pedestrian traffic. Traffic includes a horse-drawn carriage, three men conversing on the sidewalk, a man on horseback, and a man walking, a coat over his arm, who is followed by a dog. Congregation formed in 1837 and admitted to the Episcopal church in 1842. The church was the last consecrated by Bishop Potter in the Philadelphia diocese in 1864. Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established at the 100 block of Franklin Street in 1841. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. At the corner, two gentlemen converse as a driver via a three-horse team cart transports a large cylinder in which he stands. Smoke rises from three smokestacks. Below the main image, a Corinthian frame for a steam engine adorned with the makers plate "J. T. Sutton & Co. Makers. Kensington. Phila" is depicted.
