Description: Glass negative showing a view of the Morris-Littel House at 5933 Germantown Avenue, seen from across the brick road lined with trolley tracks. A low stone wall separates the house from the sidewalk and trees grow both in the lawn and in planters next to the road. The Morris-Littell House belonged to the Morris and Littell families from 1776 to 1888 when it was purchased by E.H. Butler. Dr. Christopher Wit (1675-1765) planted one of the first botanical gardens in America on the property. The house was the residence of Ann Willing Morris (1767-1853) from 1812 to 1853. Her daughters, Elizabeth Carrington Morris (1795-1865) and Margaretta Hare Morris (1797-1867) were a botanist and an entomologist respectively. Margaretta Morris was also the first woman elected to the Pennsylvania Academy of Natural Sciences.
