Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the two-level dry goods store containing a parquet floor and Corinthian columns, and busy with customers at 809-811 Chestnut Street. Men and women patrons mill around and stop at the display counters, one centrally located and the other against the wall. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. A couple with a child talks with a female clerk at the large C-shaped central counter lined with stools that encloses an island of shelves displaying dry goods. Three men convene near a woman talking to a teller behind a partition to the left. People ascend and descend the semi-circular staircase to the second floor balcony from which bolts of cloth, most with patterns, hang. Title: Washington and Lafayette Benefical Society Incorporated April 12th 1825
Description: Membership certificate containing a scene showing the December 31, 1777 meeting between Marquis De Lafayette and General Washington during the American Revolution. On the banks of the Delaware River, under the watch of guards, Washington attended by his officers extends his hand to the young Franch Major General who is accompanied by his two officers. The men stand in front of a row of tents beside which a band of uniformed militia stand near an armed frontiersman and Native American witnessing the event. In the background, militia troops drill and ships sail on the Delaware. Also contains a vignette showing a society member in his sick bed attended by his wife and fellow members. The seated men talk and sit at a table playing cards as the ailing man's son, holds a hoop, and cries at the foot of the bed. Vignette bordered by two posted schedules of the month, day, and hour of "Stated Meetings" for the year that is also printed with the notice that "The Roll shall be called precisely 30 Minutes after the time above specified. Title: St. Augustine's Church
Description: Exterior view showing the Romanesque-style Catholic church built in 1801 after the designs of Douglas Fitzmaurice Fagan at 260-262 North Fourth Street. Includes the tower built in 1829 after the designs of William Strickland. Title: Decatur Steam Fire Co. membership certificate
Description: Membership certificate containing a vignette of a steam engine in a rural setting, presumably Frankford. Also contains filigree and cornice details, including American eagles holding shields, and the letter "D" ornamented with anchor details. The fire company stationed in Frankford was instituted in 1803 and incorporated in 1842. Title: Target firing State Fencibles, Capt. J. Page, the seat of Dr. William Wetherill, Fatland (near Valley Forge) Montgomery Co. Pa. June 14th 1859
Description: Scene showing the State Fencibles militia marching past the Wetherill mansion on the Fatland estate. The men march in seven lines, led by the Fencibles marching band, followed by officers, and then four lines of enlisted men fronted by a single Fencible. All the men wear uniforms and the officers wear Hardee hats, while the enlisted men wear tall, bearskin hats. In the left foreground, a group of well-dressed men, women, and children watch the militia. In the background, other guests line the portico and verandas of the mansion. near clusters of Fencibles and spectators lining the grounds in front of the mansion. The scene also includes the trees and bushes that surround the grounds and mansion. During the 1850s, Dr. Wetherill, partner in the Wetherill & Brother White Lead Works, annually invited the Fencibles to his estate for spring target firing. The June 1859 excursion included seventy-four muskets and five officers, a lunch, dinner, and dance. The State Fencibles was a military organization raised in Philadelphia in 1813 as part of the Pennsylvania militia. In 1871, the military company, recruited under James Page, became attached to the Eighth Regiment National Guard of Pennsylvania. The Fatland seat was owned by gentleman William Bakewell beginning in 1803 before being sold to the Wetherill Family about 1821 and his death. View shows the six-story brownstone and print shop, "Goldmsith Hall," owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising "J. Haehnlen's Steam Power Printing Rooms" and "J. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Description: Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. At the top, a winged, female allegorical figure, attired in a robe and laurel wreath, sits with her arms outstretched over a shield surmounted by an eagle. She holds a bugle in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right, and she reaches in the direction of two horses that flank the shield. Description: Advertisement showing the public bathhouse originally built 1826-1827 as a shop gallery after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Patrons enter one of the four arches to the visible interior of the arcade that contains stairs over a central enclosed space that is flanked by corridors of rooms. The front facade also contains statuary and advertising signs in two niches above gated cellar entrances to "D. Gibb, Franklin House." The signs promote the tenant oyster house. Description: View showing the residence, near Dock Creek, purchased in 1693 by the second mayor of Philadelphia Edward Shippen. Dwelling includes a fenced side yard. Pedestrians, including a woman and child, walk on the sidewalk. Also shows a grove of trees and surrounding buildings., View showing the wood-plank building that served as the first sanctuary for the church founded and built in 1695 by the Church of England at 22-34 North Second Street. A wood fence protects the single-story, cabin-style building and the church bell hangs from the trunk of a tree fashioned as a bell tower. Title: Philadelphia Carnival. Easter Monday Night April 18th 1881 at the Academy of Music
Description: Ticket depicting a festive scene for the Philadelphia Carnival Bal Masque organized by the Maennechor Society, the city's German singing society. Scene depicts a man masquerading as a jester in a red costume breaking out of an egg-shaped prop (adorned with the date and location of the event) that lies on the back of a man costumed as a clown. The clown is attired in a white ensemble and is prone, lying on his stomach, and propped up by his hands. The clown wears a pointed hat, ruffled collar, wide-sleeved shirt, and blue-striped pants. Another jester, attired in a red head dress, blue shirt, and tan leggings, stands and watches to the left of the cracking egg from which his fellow jester propels himself. Above the standing jester, a putti pulls up a green drape with gold trim. In the right, in front of the clown and jester in red, a man with long blonde hair and costumed in colonial-era attire bows. He holds a tri-corn hat in his hand and wears a dark-brown coat, blue pantaloons, red shoes, and a flowing gold cape. In the right background, stands a group of male and female spectators costumed as a renaissance man, scullery maid, bald-headed clown, wizard, knight, and Quaker couple. The Maennerchor Society's Carnival Bal Masque began about 1864 and continued throughout at least the 1890s.
