Title: Jacob Haehnlen's lithographic & steam powered letter press printing rooms
Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Title: Harrison's Columbian hair dye Manufactured by Apollos W. Harrison, 8 1/2 South 7th St
Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer containing an ornate frame comprised of vignettes, pictorial details, and ornaments surrounding ornamented text. Vignettes depict patriotic symbols of the American eagle and U.S. shield and two scenes. Scene in the left shows a gentleman being attended to by his valet. The gentleman has wavy, ear-length, dark hair and wears a blue and red patterned dressing gown. The valet, in a grey suit, looks at a bottle in his gentleman's left hand. Description: Advertisement for Nathan Dunn's Chinese collection housed in the lower floors of the Philadelphia Museum also known as the Chinese Museum that was built 1836-1838. Description: Advertisement showing the Moore storefront within the two-story shop gallery built 1826-1827 after the designs of John Haviland at 615-619 Chestnut Street. Statuary, above empty niches, adorns the front facade of the four-arched gallery entrance and "JLM" is visible above the centrally-located storefront that is flanked by corridors lined with stores. Pedestrians walk in front of the arcade. Neighboring buildings, including the Bolivar House hotel (611-613), are visible. Also shows, in the foreground, a gentleman peering at the arcade from across the street. Title: The Magnetic Observatory at the Girard College
Description: Plate illustrating an oblique elevation and floor plan of the Magnetic Observatory building, the first magnetic observatory in the United States, constructed on the west grounds of the college in 1839 after designs by Thomas Ustick Walter. Labels for instruments are included in the floor plan and include a transit; clock; dew point instrument; telescope declinometer; anemometer and rain gauge; barometer; telescope & horizontal force magnetometer; telescope & vertical force megnetometer; and thermometers. The brainchild of Alexander D. Bache, the observatory was moved by master carpenter James O.
