Description: View of the "Pioneer" steam engine, the first steam engine commissioned by a Philadelphia fire company, completed in 1857 by Reaney, Neafie & Co. Engine is adorned with the makers plate dated 1856 and the name plate "Philadelphia No. 1". It is attached to a hose and a fire hydrant. Print also contains a simple border with geometric details. Philadelphia Hose Company was organized in 1803 and was also the first organization to utilize hoses of several hundred feet. Description: Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1839-1840 after the designs of Thomas S. Stewart at 330 S. 13th Street. Shows the 184 pews; chancel, including pulpit, reading desk, and communion table; vestry room; fire proof room; aisles; south, north, and organ galleries; Sunday School benches; vestibule; portico; terrace, and gates. Description: Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1856-1859 after the designs of John Notman at 200 South 19th Street. Includes the chancel; vestibules; towers; the center, South, and North galleries of pews; and a porch. Pews are printed with a row number, "value," "seats," and "rent." Values range from $1200 to $200 and pews 146 and 147 are annotated in ink: "3 for rent" and "1 for rent." In March 1859, an auction administered by M. Thomas & Sons was arranged by the vestry to raise funds to complete the construction of the church, particularly a steeple. Description: "Fortieth Illustrated" circular advertisement, probably distributed to retail dealers, for the hat manufacturer established in 1841. Contains captioned images of 66 types of men's and children's hats for the "Spring" season of 1876. Captions detail style, finish, and colors. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. Also contains trademark for the firm with motto "Semper Paratus" (i.e., always prepared). Internal text promotes the quality and styles of hats offered, including fine soft hats, fur and wool hats, harvest hats, mackinaws, and trimmed and untrimmed hats. Text on verso encourages business people to visit Philadelphia prior to the opening of the Exhibition in order to become acquainted with the city and its accommodations, and to purchase spring fashions at the firm., Accompanied by advertising envelope for the firm illustrated with a transfer lithograph of the store at 606 & 608 Market Street. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital, corner of Broad St. & Washington Avenue
Description: Print containing a montage of 11 exterior and interior views of the volunteer hospital opened September 5, 1862 opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot. Central view shows a bustling street scene outside of the hospital. Horse-drawn carriages, possibly including an ambulance, arrive and depart; injured soldiers are carried by stretcher and assisted by fellow soldiers to the building; male and female pedestrians converse and traverse the streets; two boys attempt to help a man with his valise; and Zouaves patronize a female vendor's stand. Other views show the "Interior of Hospital" where women volunteers and doctors attend to bed-ridden soldiers; the "Kitchen" equipped with an ice box, cooking stove, and heating stove where two women prepare food on a counter; the "Dining Room" in which several soldiers eat at three long rows of tables near a heating stove; the "Laundry" room where women sort, fold, and wash cloths in a sink, near a large vat of boiling water; the "Ladies Kitchen" containing cupboards of dishware, a small cooking stove, and a rack of cooking utensils in which three women work; the "Wash Room" in which four men wash up at a trough of sinks; the "Drug Room" in which a pharmacist distills drugs for a soldier and women volunteer in front of a wall of medicinal bottles; a female volunteer at the counter of the "Store Room" attended by a man surrounded by several shelves packed with supplies; the "Bath Room" lined with tubs in which a soldier begins to undress; and female volunteers setting tables in the "Officers Dining Room.", Also includes two American flags draped over the borders of one of the views. The hospital provided care to the most seriously injured before their reassignment to other hospitals. Title: Accident on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, near Burlington, N.J. Aug. 29th 1855. 21 persons killed_ 75 wounded
Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. Description: View of the Episcopal church built 1856-1857 at 711-721 Catharine Street. Church property contains side courtyards enclosed by iron gates. Also show partial views of neighboring buildings and street and pedestrian traffic. Traffic includes a horse-drawn carriage, three men conversing on the sidewalk, a man on horseback, and a man walking, a coat over his arm, who is followed by a dog. Congregation formed in 1837 and admitted to the Episcopal church in 1842. The church was the last consecrated by Bishop Potter in the Philadelphia diocese in 1864. Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established at the 100 block of Franklin Street in 1841. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. Title: The Sarcophagus brought from Syria & presented By Come. Elliott to the Girard College This sarcophagus was discovered by a countryman, who was planting a mulberry tree, about sixteen feet under ground, three-fourth's of a mile east from Beyront, in the centre of the spot where once stood the ancient Berytus, and six hundred feet above the level of the sea; it required nearly five hundred men to remove it a mile and a half, on board the vessel. The sarcophagus is cut out of a solid piece of white marble, and has a cover in the form of a slooping roof, of one piece of marble. On the principal side it has this inscription. Jvlia. C. Fil Mamaea vixit. Ann. XXX. Its dimenions are seven feet four and a half inches long by two feet seven and three-fourth inches wide within the cornice, and it stands four feet three inches high to the apex of the cover, which is nineteen inches deep. We learn from Gibbon that the Emperor Severus A.D. 208, married Julia Domna of Eamesa in Syria, she had a sister Julia Maesa who resided for a time at Emesa with her two daughters Soamias and Mamaea, each of whom had a son, the first was the Emperor Elagabalus the other the Emperor Alexander Severus; during the early part of his reign Jvlia Mamaea remained the sole agent of her son and of the empire

The boys who cozy up to their seated father, wear a military style suit or a dress and pants. The woman, seated on a chaise lounge, wears a bonnet and holds a riding crop. Most of the men wear suits, including two attired in striped pants, and the host wears an evening suit with white bow tie and tails. Four of the men wear or hold a top hat and a couple, arriving from the door, is attired in a suit and riding habit. The other woman, the hostess, at the center of the scene, flanked by her children, wears an evening dress with plunging neckline.
