Description: Fashion advertisement containing two paneled scenes of 22 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight men, a woman, and two boys socialize in clusters of three and four. The men and boys predominately wear suits, and the woman wears a ruffled layered dress with full skirt and as well as a bonnet. The other male figures wear a bed jacket and cap (man) and a dress with sash over bloomers (boy). A large vanity and two chairs furnish the room decorated with framed paintings, carpet, drapery, and wallpaper. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene set before an oceanside. Eight men, including "His Excellency A. Johnson" and "L. Hyneman Proprietor of Masonic Mirror," two boys, and a woman descend upon and stand on the stone pier. Six of the men wear suits, including overcoats. The two other men wear a riding outfit and a hunting outfit, including a rifle. Description: View showing the hospital, also known as the "Bishop Potter Memorial House," opened in 1852 in the donated former residence of Philadelphia merchant John Leamy at Front Street and Lehigh Avenue in Kensington. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the hospital grounds along the landscaped oval driveway in front of the institution. Also shows two figures near the left wing of the building. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panels of 24 elegantly attired men, women, and children in outdoor settings. Lower panel captioned "Baltimore" includes nine men, two boys, and a woman socializing by the riverside. Upper panel captioned "Philadelphia" includes eight men and four boys. The men wear winter coats, capes, jackets, vests, bow ties, and tapered pants. Many of the pants are adorned with rows of buttons, embroidery or stripes. Title: Solar Tip shoes for children Made only by John Mundell & Co. Philada
Description: Advertisement using trompe l'oeil to depict a genre scene set in a cobbler shop as an illustrated poster with a curling edge. Shows a mother with her two sons (attired in dresses) patronizing the shop. The cobbler, at his work table, holds up a 'Solar Tip" shoe to the child showing his toe-worn shoe and offers the advice "Buy the Genuine Solar Tip. Then your shoes won't need mending." The mother holds the hands of the boy who has lifted his foot, his toe poking from the worn shoe, at which a cat, with a ribbon collar, swats his paw. The cat stands by the cobbler's feet and near boots soaking in a bucket. Tools are mounted on the side of the cobbler's table, and above his workspace a Solar Tip shoe advertisement hangs next to a shelve of personal wares and a row of shoe forms. Description: Circular containing patriotic vignettes above paragraphs of advertising text in addition to bank note specimens for the lithographic studio that began operating at 409 Chestnut in 1858. Central vignette shows the figure of Liberty, one breast exposed, holding a shield and a liberty staff beside a fache and eagle. Surrounding vignettes show sailing vessels, the figure of Justice surrounded by symbols of patriotism and trade, and an allegorical scene with three women posed around an anchor with one, seated, and clinging to the legs of another who stands in a forceful stance. Specimens include female figures and the Traubel imprint. Figures depicted as a romanticized peasant woman, the figure of Justice, and a Native American princess, possibly Columbia. Description: Series of tradecards advertising the lithographic firm established as Craig, Butt & Finley in 1869 and renamed Craig, Finley & Co. in 1872. Seven of the tradecards depict quaint scenes of children at play and work in addition to one containing a montage of vignette views of buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Scenes include a boy presenting flowers to a girl, children witnessing breaking and broken wares, children chasing a rabbit, a shepherd boy with a lamb, and girls performing the wash. All the boys are attired in knickers and most wear hats. Most of the girls are attired in peasant-like dresses. Title: View of the reception of the 29th Regiment, P. V., at Philadelphia
Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Also shows two boys in a scuffle among the spectators., Buildings line the route, most in shadowy, partial views except the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home at Race and Crown (opened December 1863) and the adjacent buildings near the top of the view. Women crowd the windows of the home and a large American flag marked "Cooper Shop Soldiers Home" stands in front of the building. Also contains the names by Field and Staff Officers, Non-Commissioned Staff, and by Company, of the "Veterans of the 29th," including the African American Company K in addition to the names of the "Board of Managers of the Cooper Shop Soldiers' Home." The procession commenced at about one o'clock from Market Street Bridge down Market Street to Twenty-First Street eventually arriving at the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home where the members of the 29th regiment had dinner before proceeding to the National Guards Hall (518-520 Race Street) to be welcomed by Colonel John Price Wetherill. The order of the procession was as follows the First City Troop; 27th New York Battery; Liberty Coronet Band; Henry Guards; four companies of invalids corps; Provost Guard; discharged members of the regiment; Birgfield's Band; former (Murphy) and present (Rickards) commander of the regiment; Lieut. Col. Zulick of the regiment; the regiment; female family members; First Regiment, Jefferson Coronet Band, Pennsylvania Military Institute cadets, City Council members, and other guards and regiments; and lastly the ambulances of the firemen. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 19 elegantly attired men and women in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 8 men and two women socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped or plaid pants, long coats tapered at the waist, and bow ties. Some hold top hats and canes. The women wear a bonnet, shirtwaist, and full skirt or a riding habit. Furnishings include a marble pedestal, and mosaic carpeting and wallpaper. Lower panel shows General Zachary Taylor and two military officers, in uniforms and mounted on horses, flanked by 6 male civilians in front of a military training ground. All the plain-clothed men wear top hats, striped or checkered pants, and overcoats or capes. Background includes calvary troops on drill and a cannon. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 17 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor, hunting setting. Upper panel shows four men, two women and three boys in a furnished parlor. All of the men are attired in long jackets, vests, cravats and patterned pants. Two hold or wear hats, and two hold canes. To the left, two men stand and converse with two women. The seated lady holds a fan and wears an evening dress, with a low, straight neckline. Her hair is styled in ringlets, and a flower rests behind her ear. The other woman adorns outerwear styled with a high-necked, tight-waisted dress, shawl and plumed bonnet. To the right, two men stand with three boys, who all wear flat caps. The boy on the left is dressed in an Eton suit, while the other two younger boys wear longer tunic suits. Description: Diploma containing two vignettes and and a dominant scene symbolizing agriculture separated by borders comprised of sheaves of wheat, a shovel, farm produce, and vinery. In the upper right, vignettes depict a farmer reaping his field with a horse-drawn reaper and an industrial view of a train passing a coal breaker factory across from a coal mine in which horse-drawn coal cars arrive and depart. The dominant scene shows a farm with livestock, including a pig, turkeys, chickens, and ducks milling the grounds near a woman milking a cow while farmhands corral cows out of a yard, transport a wagon of hay from a barn, and plow a field. View also shows horses before a pasture of grazing sheep and other homesteads, the Wyoming Monument (erected in 1833 in memory of victims of the Wyoming Massacre 1778), and treescaped hills in the distance. The Luzerne County Agricultural Society was founded in 1858 by persons interested in farming and gardening with the mission "to foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Title: Tamany Fish House, on the Pea Shore, R. Delaware
Description: View showing visitors enjoying the public grounds of the Tamany Pea Shore Fishing Company, a social and sporting club founded by Philadelphia artisans in 1803 on the New Jersey Shore above Camden. People stroll on the veranda of the club house remodeled in 1832 and are visible in the upper-floor windows. The building, reflected in the water, is adorned with a flag and a weather-vane shaped as a fish. The kitchen building stands to the right of the main building. Between the two buildings, two men stand in front of a water pump. Couples stroll and an older man fishes on a wooden pier, to which a rowboat is tied, that stretches from the shore. In the right, a rowboat carrying seven passengers (5 men, 2 women) approaches a boy and a man preparing to fish next to their grounded rowboat on the riverbank. Other guests stroll and greet each other on the shore that is lined with trees. Lithograph partially printed over and surrounded by an ornate chromolithgraphed decorative border and pasted letterpress cutouts. Shows pedestrian traffic in front of the church built 1853-1854 under the supervision of the building committee of Rev. Dr. J. F. Berg, George Hawes, D. W. C. Moore, and Charles Collins Jr. Pedestrians include a man carrying a bundle on his shoulder and a boy playing with a hoop. Congregation organized in 1852 from members withdrawn from the First German Reformed Church. Title: Grand United Order Odd Fellows America [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate for the African American fraternal organization containing an allegorical view that includes Odd Fellow iconography. Shows the female figures of Justice and Truth standing on globes and flanking a framed view of an ark at sea. Justice holds a sword and scale and Truth holds a torch, serpent, and a mirror from which a light shines. Visible within and bordering the view are Odd Fellow symbols, including the sickle and hourglass, dove, skull and crossbones, the lamb, heart-in-hand, and the lion. Above the view the female figure Charity sits and holds children in her lap below the all Seeing Eye in the night sky under a rainbow marked "G.U.O. of O.F."
