Title: Terrible conflagration and destruction of the steam-boat "New Jersey," On the River Delaware, opposite Philadelphia, on the night of Saturday, March 15th, 1856, between 8 and 9 o'clock, by which dreadful calamity sixty-one lives were lost. Names of all on board
Description: Dramatic view of the steamboat engulfed in flames and smoke, the captain still at the helm as the passengers escape into the icy river. Panicked-looking passengers jump into the water already teeming with disaster victims, including an African American man, who thrash, swim, and attempt to stay upon and assist others onto cakes of ice, debris, and a single rowboat. Rescuers from the nearby wharf, including firemen, work in a frantic manner and desperately throw a rope to a white woman standing on an ice floe. Also shows a horse on the fire engulfed deck and a white woman propelled by a flame off of the rear of the boat. A sign for "Baths" is visible on the riverbank in the background. Contains the names of the 107 white and "colored" dead, missing, and saved passengers in three columns below the image. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as a result of defective boilers, a fireplace, and brick work. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Title: Commissioners Hall, Northern Liberties, Phila
Description: Exterior winter view of the hall as it looked on February 22, 1852, with adjoining fenced property, adorned with an American flag, and containing the district's police station and Mayor's office, on the busy, snow covered Third Street between Buttonwood and Green streets. Several warmly dressed white pedestrians, hall officials, and a policeman mill about and converse on the sidewalk; white children throw snowballs and play with a sled; horse-drawn sleighs pass by; white men shovel snow off the street and hall steps; and an African American man carrying a basket of celery and a dead goose stops in the street and looks behind him and toward the passing sled. A broadside inscribed, "Washington, 22nd Feb. 1852" adorns a nearby building. Prior to the city's consolidation with bordering townships in 1854, neighborhoods maintained and housed their own police stations, mayors, and other government officials in Commissioners Halls, including Northern Liberties. Description: Artist and publication information supplied by Wainwright., Exterior view of Pennsylvania Hall engulfed in flames. A large crowd looks on. Fire fighters spray water on an adjoining building. Pennsylvania Hall was constructed 1837-1838 at Sixth and Haines Streets in Philadelphia as a meeting place for local abolitionist groups. Dedication ceremonies began on May 14, 1838 and continued over several days in a climate of growing hostility. On the night of May 17, 1838 a mob stormed the Hall and set it on fire. Fire companies refused to fight the blaze, and the building was completely destroyed. Bowen issued this print commemorating the event within a few days of the fire., Gift of Mrs. S. Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson's inscription on recto: Mar. 1849; Market Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates", "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements including a large scale model of a coffee pot contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a couple strolls, two laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a female customer enters the store. An African American peddler with tray and bell passes a line of crates on the sidewalk. Tinsmiths work near the third floor windows. Melloy & Ford, a partnership established in 1849, was in business until 1861 when Melloy entered partnership with Isaac Smith at the same address.

Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips partnership, established in 1845 remained at the site until 1852.

B. Lippincott in 1849. Shows the block of buildings (10-20 North Fourth Street) covered in signage and including Barcroft, Beaver & Co., dry good dealers and S. M. Day, wholesale combs, brush and fancy goods trimmings (10); Goff & Peterson, importers and manufacturers of saddlery, carriage, and harness trimmings (12); Grigg, Elliot & Co. (14); C. H. & Geo. Abbott, dealers and importers of hardware and cutlery and C. Ahrenfeldt & Co., importers of toys & fancy goods (16); C. B. Lassell & Co., hats and caps and Charles Wingate, dealer in shoes, boots, and palm leaf hats (18); and Edwin & John Tams, importers and dealers of china, earthernware, and glass (20). Patrons exit and enter the various storefronts; delivery men, including an African American man, haul, load, and remove goods from horse-drawn and push carts; laborers load goods into shop storage cellars and use a pulley to raise a large cask; store clerks inspect and open newly arrived packages on the sidewalk; a horse-drawn dust settling machine passes in the street; and artisans and merchandise are visible in several of the shops' upper floor windows. Description: Manuscript note on verso: No. 15 So. Fourth Street., Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson inscription on recto: 1831, no. 15 So. Fourth Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half story hotel at 15 South Fourth Street operated, as indicated by a placard above the door, by Horatio Wade. Wade remained proprietor from 1831 until 1833. Elegantly dressed guests enter the building, converse on the sidewalk, and rest and read inside near the first floor windows. On the sidewalk, well-dressed pedestrians stroll and an African American hotel porter pushes a wheelbarrow of luggage. The Indian Queen Hotel established in 1771, the building altered several times until razed in 1851, was until the mid 19th century incorrectly identified as the site of Thomas Jefferson's writing of the Declaration of Independence.

North Second Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half story warehouse operated by Frederick Foering and C.A. Thudium at 87 North Second Street. In the open entranceways, a clerk assists a female shopper and an African American laborer lifts a stove. Displays of stoves line the sidewalk and the store walls. On the second floor near open windows, white laborers work. A horse-drawn cart departs an adjoining exitway. Foering and Thudium, one of the city's first domestic stove manufacturers, started in business in 1828, and operated on North Second Street from 1845 until 1847.

Description: Copyrighted by A. Pharazin., Date of publication supplied by Wainwright., Dramatic view of the steamboat engulfed in flames and smoke, the captain still at the helm as the passengers, including African Americans, escape for their lives into the icy river. Panicked passengers jump into the water already teeming with disaster victims who thrash, swim, and attempt to stay upon and assist others onto cakes of ice, debris, and a single rowboat. Rescuers from the nearby wharf, including firemen, work frantically and desperately throw a rope to a woman standing afloat a cake of ice. Contains the names of the 107 white and "colored" dead, missing, and saved passengers in three columns below the image. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Corson survived by leaping ashore before the uncontrolled ship drifted back out on the river.
