Title: The Central High School of Philadelphia, the controllers of the public schools of the first school district of Pennsylvania, by authority of the Commonwealth granted April 9th, 1849, have this day conferred the degree of Master of Arts
Description: Diploma from Central High School of Philadelphia completed to William Stephens for Master of Arts, Feb. 10, 1853 and depicting three vignettes at the top. In the left, shows an allegorical scene with a white woman, attired in a laurel crown, sketching on a pad; an older, white man seated and holding calipers; and three young, white boys looking through a telescope, moving a globe, and sketching or writing on a pad. In the center, shows an exterior view of Central High School at Juniper Street. In the foreground, a white man sits beneath a tree and sketches a statue of Liberty holding a cap and pole. A paint palette and brushes are beside him. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk in front of the school. Title: FacSimile of the revolutionary flag, A.D. 1774
Description: Depiction of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry’s flag from 1774. Shows the flag with fringed edges on a spiked flagpole adorned with two tassels and held open by a rope from its upper right corner tied to a tree in the right. In the top left of the flag are thirteen stripes representing the colonies. In the center, flanking a shield illustrated with thirteen ropes tied into a Gordian Knot are allegorical figures representing Liberty and Fame. Liberty, depicted as a barefooted Native American figure attired in a headdress, feather skirt, and with a quiver of arrows on their back, carries a bow and a liberty cap on a pole. Fame, depicted as a winged angel, blows a trumpet. Above the shield is a horse’s head wearing a bridle with the letters “LHC,” which stands for light horse cavalry. Title: Masonic memorial
Description: Commemorative, fictionalized group portrait print depicting “seventy-seven Masonic Brethren, Signers of the Declaration of American Independence and other Distinguished Members of the “Masonic Fraternity” in the Assembly Room of Independence Hall. Shows three rows of Brethren (“Distinguished Dead” and “immortal”) within the paneled wall room of the historic site being used as an exhibit gallery. At the center of the first row stands “Father of his Country” George Washington, his left hand on his hip, and wearing a masonic apron adorned with Masonic symbols. Nearest him to the left, also in masonic, but undecorated, aprons, stand Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Other figures in undecorated aprons in the front row include (left to right) James Buchanan; Marquise de Lafayette; Bishop William White; Andrew Jackson; and Henry Clay. Some of the men hold hats or scrolls, while others hold their hands together, or cross their arms. Other figures in the further rows include Stephen Girard, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckenridge. In the background, framed artwork, predominately from the Charles Willson Peale portrait collection; Henry Inman's portrait painting of William Penn (left); Thomas Sully's portrait painting of Lafayette (right) line the walls.
