Description: The Bank of the United States Records contains correspondence and documents primarily related to the second Bank of the United States in Philadelphia, with a small collection of material from the first bank, and from several of the second bank's branches in other American cities. There is correspondence with officers of the banks and its patrons John Sergeant, Basil Hall, Nathaniel Silsbee, and William Henry Harrison, as well as documents relating to the construction of the second Bank building designed by William Strickland. Papers relating to the duties of the Commissioners of Loans in the states of Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania are filed at the end of the collection., The early national period of the United States was marked by two attempts at central banking, the first and second Bank of the United States, both headquartered in Philadelphia. The first bank was chartered in 1791 with a twenty-year term that was allowed to expire in 1811. Its first president, serving from 1791 through 1807, was Philadelphia merchant Thomas Willing (1731-1821). The bank established offices of discount and deposit in 1792 in Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, and New York, after which it opened offices in Norfolk (1800), Washington and Savannah (1802), and New Orleans (1805)., Plagued by financial troubles during and after the War of 1812, Congress authorized a second bank in 1816, also with a twenty-year renewable term. The acting treasury secretary and Philadelphia native William Jones (1760-1831) was appointed the second bank's first president, succeeded in 1819 by Langdon Cheves (1776-1857), and in 1823 by Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844). The second Bank of the United States opened in Philadelphia in 1817 with seventeen branches in twelve states and the District of Columbia; by 1830 there were twenty-five branches in operation. The bank was not renewed by Congress, and ceased operation in 1836.

At that point, Lewis became president, and retained the position until his death in 1840.

Description: Glass negative showing a group posed in a decorated interior of the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue, including Marriott Morris' parents Elliston P. Morris and Martha Canby Morris, sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, cousin George Spencer, aunts Lydia Morris and Beulah Rhoads, uncle Charles Rhoads, and secon cousin once removed Hannah Perot Morris. Charles Rhoads and Hannah Morris stand in the back while the others sit. Elizabeth Morris, in the center of the group, holds a small black dog, Jet, in her lap. The men wear three-piece suits and the women wear dark-colored dresses. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Description: Collection of photographs, several unidentified, of members of the African American middle-class Steven-Cogdell and Sanders-Venning and Chew family of Philadelphia, as well as their extended families and friends. Includes predominantly studio portraiture, including a portrait of William H. Chew (P.2013.14.10), in addition to two miniatures (possibly members of the Cogdell family) and a casual group photograph. Also includes a small number of photographs representing the African American expatriate entertainers' community in Paris in the 1930s; a group portrait of the “Soap Box Minstrels, Musical Fund Hall, December 7, 1909”; and a group portrait with possibly George Washington Musgrave. Minstrel show photograph depicts performers in black face and African American musicians on a stage in front of which a row of African American performers, some in costume and some in tuxedoes, is seated. George Venning and his brother-in-law William Holden were founders of the Soap Box Social in 1908. The Soap Box Social performed an annual minstrel show in the aughts as a fundraiser for the Citizens Republican Club, a social and political club of African American elite men started in 1884. The club’s mission focused on the election of African Americans into public office., Blackface minstrelsy is a popular entertainment form, originating in the United States in the mid-19th century and remaining in American life through the 20th century.
