Description: Collection of fifteen cartes de visite of sentimental, satiric, and racist Civil War era scenes, predominately depicting white men soldiers, by Philadelphia artist Henry Collins Bispham. Includes scenes of soldiers flushing out a sharpshooter, engaged in battle, wielding a knife, being thwarted from stealing a chicken and honey, dozing on watch, and confronted on horseback by a growling dog, as well as contrasting views of a Union and Confederate amputee soldier returning home. Racist caricatures show an ape walking with a cane, Lincoln spoon feeding a white man soldier the "Black Draft," and a downtrodden Southern white woman on the defense with an enslaved African American man on crutches and an African American boy. Other images show Abraham Lincoln as a dog confronting opossum Jefferson Davis on a tree and an itinerant white man musician with a monkey and dog. Title: John Dickinson papers
Description: This collection documents John Dickinson's roles in politics, business, law, nation building, and the American Revolution. The collection is arranged in two series: "John Dickinson" and "Mary Norris Dickinson," with the bulk of the collection contained within the "John Dickinson" series. This collection was organized into its current arrangement, probably in 1978. Prior to that, the collection was described to an item level in a calendar created by John H. Powell. While the 1978 re-arrangement has resulted in the physical order of the calendar being unusable, the information contained therein is of the utmost value and a pdf version of the calendar is attached to this finding aid.

Title: Memorial chart centennial jubilee Liberty, equality, fraternity to all nations
Description: Print commemorating the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 containing allegorical vignettes bordered by portraits of the eighteen presidents and views of Philadelphia landmarks and Centennial buildings. Allegorical vignettes show the female figures of Justice, Liberty, and Prosperity seated next to each other on a pedestal in front of a mountain valley, and a large assembly of men of international origin attired in native costumes. Depicted Philadelphia landmarks include Independence Hall, Masonic Temple, Girard College, Carpenters Hall, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Music. Centennial building exteriors include the Main Building, Machinery Hall, and Memorial Hall. Title: Pierre Eugène du Simitière collection
Description: The Library Company of Philadelphia purchased this collection of Pierre Eugene Du Simitière's manuscripts at the auction of Du Simitière's American Museum after his death on March 10, 1785. The books and pamphlets bought at the same auction have been dispersed through the Library Company's collections. Du Simitière gathered or copied these manuscripts during his travels in the West Indies, Boston, New York, and while he lived in Philadelphia, where he was a member of and one of the curators of the American Philosophical Society. After the Library Company of Philadelphia purchased the manuscripts, they were bound together. The Historical Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration described the manuscripts in "Descriptive Catalogue of the Du Simitière Papers in the Library Company of Philadelphia" (1940), from which many of the following series and records descriptions have been abstracted. Since the Historical Records survey, many of the bound volumes have been unbound and foldered by the Library Company of Philadelphia. The unbound volumes in the series descriptions contain folder level description; however, the bound volumes are described only as an overall work. For more detail on the bound volumes, see the "Descriptive Catalogue of the Du Simitière Papers in the Library Company of Philadelphia" (1940). Researchers should be aware that the series titles are drawn from the title of the bound volume. It is important to read the entire scope note for each series, because the volumes often contained additional topics than are listed in the title.

Title: Flags
Description: Set of six flags: French, Belgium, Italian, Union Jack, and two 48-star American flags. These flags decorated Mabel Brice’s home at 1320 Locust Street when she hosted the Queen of Belgium for tea. Mabel Brice Wheeler (1873-1965) volunteered in the Emergency Aid of Pennsylvania’s Belgium Relief Committee during the First World War. The Belgian Royal family toured the United States between September 23 and November 1919 to thank the American people for all of their help. King Albert and Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, along with their son Leopold, the Duke of Brabant, traveled to Philadelphia on October 27, 1919. They went to Independence Hall and the headquarters of the Belgian Relief Committee. The Queen had tea at the home of Mabel Brice while the King and Duke explored the shipyard at Hog Island. Ephraim and Mary Brice (Mabel’s parents) purchased the house in 1900, and Mabel lived there the rest of her life. Title: In seventeen hundred and eighty three, by the Treaty of Paris, our states were made free, and the Enterprise cork puller helped on the cause while the patriots drank to our land and its laws
Description: Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Enterprise Cork Pullers." Contains an anachronistic scene including a caricaturized depiction of John Adams, John Jay, and Benjamin Franklin. Depicts the statesmen near a black servant using an Enterprise cork puller clamped to a table to open a bottle. Adams holds the "Treaty of Peace" and a glass. Behind the three men, several other dignitaries holding up glasses are partially visible. Also contains a view of the Massachusetts State Building designed by Peabody & Stearns. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Description: Collection of billheads, dated between 1845 and 1879, containing decorative and ornate lettering, ornamented type, vignette illustrations, and pictorial details. Illustrations depict exteriors of storefronts (some adorned in signage) and an allegorical scene showing Hermes seated among crates, barrels, and bundles, near a brick oven in front of a docked ship at which a horse-drawn dray stands. Webster, the children of the photographer's brother, Albert Webster (1850-1913), playing ball with their mother, Anna Dutton Webster, on the lawn in front of Stouton, the former country seat of William MacPherson, owned by the Webster family since 1805. Mary S. Webster, the photographer's older sister, sits on a bench nearby, with her hands in a fur muff., William MacPherson was the son of Captain John MacPherson (1726-1792) from Edinburgh. William served as lieutenant for the British army during the first year of the Revolutionary War, but joined the Colonial army under the leadership of Lafayette. Appointed surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia in 1789 and commanded the Philadelphia battalion, the "MacPherson Blues", during the Whiskey Insurrection in 1794. Title: M'Clellan & Pendleton One flag & one country The Central Democratic McClellan Club, in accordance with the wishes of the people, have fixed upon Wednesday, November 2, at 10 o'clock, A.M., for holding a grand mass meeting, in Doylestown, to which they cordially invite their brethren from Northampton, Lehigh, Montgomery, Philadel'a, as well as our New Jersey friends! Come one, come all Come in your strength, as your fathers came in the days of Jackson and Polk; come in delegations of hundreds and thousands, with your wives, your daughters and sweethearts; come with your big teams, your small wagons, your carriages, on horseback and on foot; come with your banners, your flags and hickory poles. Come as white freemen! to rejoice over the victory won in October last, come prepared to strike the death blow on November eighth to Lincoln despotism. Lincoln debts, Lincoln taxes, Lincoln drafts, Lincoln war, death, misery, and Lincoln misrule in general, so that, God willing, peace and prosperity, the Union, Constitution, and liberty, may at an early day, again bless the states and the people. There will be a grand procession, with bands of music, and the thirty-four states will be represented by a cavalcade of ladies!! The committee have secured the Doylestown exhibition grounds, where teams can be driven for safety. Arrangements have been made there to feed horses, aad [sic] men will be in readiness to give attention to all that drive to that place. Oats will be furnished at $1 per bushel. List of speakers: Gov.
