- Description
- Birds-eye view of Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war-camp in Georgia, with the vast prison area surrounded by stockade fences. In the center are numerous prisoners and their hand-made housing, consisting of various fabrics and mounds of dirt. Guard towers surround the fence and guards, on foot, horseback, and in horse-drawn carts patrol. In the right, men, many of whom use canes or crutches and have amputated legs sit, lie down, or walk in a separate fenced area that has tents. Two cannon emplacements with soldiers are visible in the foreground. Several buildings and a train traveling down the railroad tracks are visible in the background. The prison operated from February 1864 until April 1865. It housed up to 45,000 Union prisoners in overcrowded conditions and had the highest death rate of all the Civil War prisons., Title from item., Date from copyright statement: Copyright, 1890 by J.W. - Life membership certificate containing a vignette contrasting scenes of apocalyptic doom and religious salvation. Shows to the right an angel trumpeting salvation and wielding the Bible above a missionary preaching to a large group of Native Americans and a converted Black family kneeling and reaching toward the heavens; broken shackles and swords beside them. Opposite the scenes of salvation, a cross rises from the ground, bringing forth a river of redemption too late for the lost souls of a bejeweled "heathen" woman and a skull-headed man entangled by serpents. Behind them a temple, probably the Vatican, collapses to the ground. The Missionary Society, officially organized in New York in 1820, worked first to convert Native Americans and enslaved people before extending their missions to the Black inhabitants of Liberia in 1823., Issued to Eliza J. - Description
- Lantern slide with three sequential scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin." Depicts scenes from chapters 26, 40, and 41. Chapter 26 image shows the deathbed scene of Eva St. Clair. Shows Eva in bed, seated up, holding a bouquet of flowers in her lap, and surrounded by people. Eva's parents Mr. and Mrs. St. Clare sit on either side of the bed and Miss Ophelia kneels and cries behind Mr. St. Clare. Mrs. St. Clare holds a fan, has a handkerchief in her lap, and looks toward Eva. Mr. St. Claire, rests his head in one hand, and has his other hand on the bed. In front of Eva, the enslaved men and women of the household, including Tom, kneel, stand, pray, hold handkerchiefs, and cry. The setting also includes a window with open drapes, a curtain behind Eva's bed, and a side table adorned with a vase of flowers. Chapter 40 scene represents the beating of Tom by his enslaver Simon Legree following the escape of the enslaved Cassy and Emmeline. Shows Tom, with grey hair, a grey beard, and barefooted, lying on a pile of cotton on the floor of a shed. Legree stands over him with one hand clenched in a fist toward his chest and the other clenched by his side as he raises up one of his feet. Chapter 41 scene shows an adult George Shelby visiting with the beaten and dying Tom after locating him in order to see if he "couldn't buy him back." Shows Tom lying on a pile of cotton near the opening to a shed. An open book lies near him by his hand. Shelby leans over Tom and holds his hand. - Group portrait of forty nine Americans gathered together at a meeting of the New York Historical Society in the University Chapel. Seen in the foreground, from left to right, are: George W. Bethune, Zadock Pratt, Francis L. Hawks, John E. Wool, Horatio Seymour, John W. Francis, Hamilton Fish, Winfield Scott, Jonathan M Wainwright, Daniel Webster, Samuel Jones, Franklin Pierce, William C. Bryant, Henry Clay, Edward Everett, Fred de Peyster, Luther Bradish, Martin Van Buren, George Bancroft, John Van Buren, William L. Marcy, and Lewis Cass. Another twenty seven men are seen in the background, including: Millard Fillmore, William H. Seward, John C. Calhoun and Valentine Mott. Each man wears a dark suit with a light shirt and tie. The men face in all directions; some look out toward the viewer and others turn to the side with no interaction among each other.
