- Collection of stationery, primarily illustrated and typographical letterheads, billheads, and form letters, of pharmaceutical firms and related businesses and institutions in the United States (predominantly New York City, New York, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania) issued between circa 1840 and 1935. Subjects include invoices and receipts, shipping arrangements and fees, product orders, payments and payment disputes. Firms, businesses, and institutions well represented include James S. Aspinwall; William P. Blanding; L. N. Brunswig; Caswell, Massey & Co.; C.J. Lincoln Co.; College of Pharmacy of the City of New York; Geo. C. Goodwin & Co.; Hall & Ruckel; Dr. William A. Hammond's Sanitarium; Hopkins-Weller Drug Co.; James Baily & Son; J. D. Marshall & Bros. (D. Marshall & Bro.); J. L. Lyons & Co.; A. M. - Billheads containing vignette exterior view of the six-story building adorned in signage of the Philadelphia firm established circa 1868. A pyramid shaped display is visible in the lower floor show window. Also shows heavy street and pedestrian traffic, including a horse-drawn delivery wagon marked "Drugs." One of the prints also contains two "reduced copies of our beautiful large Chromo lithographs Show cards in six colors, handsomely framed in walnut and gilt, given away with the first order of the goods represented." The views show horses, cows, sheep, and pigs gathered in landscape settings near a railroad bridge and farm, and mountains and a lake. Billheads also contain "Terms," including claims policies and the honoring of retails prices, and a list of "Some of Our Other Specialties.", Engravers include Smith Bros., P.2011.46.10 completed in manuscript to C.N. Fullerton Hazard (successors of Alexander Fullerton, 174 Market Street), and wholesale and retail hatter, Elijah Bowen (176 Market Street). Both four-story, three-bay buildings are covered in signage. Signs advertise "Alexander Fullerton drugs medicine & paints" in two locations on the facade of 174 Market Street, indicating a recent shift in ownership of the drug store. A man stands in each of the two doors to each store. In Moyer & Hazard's shop, a man stands in the left doorway and points and directs a laborer who moves goods on a dolly. Another man emerges from the bulkhead, while a gentleman wearing a top hat enters the business through the door on the right. Decanters and other glassware fill the shop windows. Boxes and barrels labeled "Madder," "Indigo," "Sp. Turpentine," "G. Copal," "Oil Vit." line the edge of the sidewalk in the foreground. A man moves a box in the left door of Elijah Bowen's shop. - Advertisement showing the bustling and sign covered four-story corner storefront of the druggist at 801 North Third Street. A large banner above the main entrances to the building reads "J. Horn Drugs & Chemical Store City & County Physicians Can Always Be Supplied With Medicines & Chemicals Of The Purest Kind Prepared With The Greatest Care From The Latest French English German & American Journals." A figure of an eagle adorns the doorways in which a man enters and through which a clerk assisting a lady at the counter is visible. Flasks, decanters and medical type instruments fill the three display windows. A woman peers at one of them. Barrels and crates, a few marked, line the building and sidewalk. Boxes are piled near most of the upper floor windows and a clerk works at a lower one near a side door in which a lady enters across from a tree in full bloom. In the street, a partially loaded horse-drawn dray rests as a laborer retrieves goods for it from the store cellar. On the roof, lined with balustrades, two couples and a trio of women look out at the vista. Marked goods include indigo, oil-vitrol, and soda ash. - Billhead for the drug firm established in 1848 by Dr. Charles Fronefield and Dr. Breinig. Contains vignette showing druggists' apparatus and supplies, including beakers, flasks, a scale, distiller, mortar and pestle, barrels, casks, and crates of oil of vitriol and glass., Completed in manuscript to Mr. J. S. Stetter on December 31, 1852 for "Roll Sulph" for $21.93., Manuscript note on recto: Dear Sir: There is a small bill standing against you since Nov./51. It was sent twice but the first time it got lost, which no one could justly say was our fault, but as it is somewhat hard for one to bear thy whole loss we are willing to lose 1/4; if it is satisfactory. - Illustrated trade card and holiday greeting card depicting three girls sitting and lying in bed admiring a decorated Christmas tree., Advertising text printed on verso promotes Pleis' fit powders for the cure of fits (epilepsy), spasms, convulsions, St. Vitus' dance, neuralgia nervousness, and all nervous affections. - Description
- Trade card showing a girl posting a "bill" advertising "Eskay's Albumenized Food for Infants and Invalids" on a wood fence. A satchel lies beside her on the ground. Eskay's food was a modified milk product., Publication date based on copyright statement "copyrighted 1896, S, K, & F. Co. Philadelphia.", Name of artist from several lines of advertising text printed on verso, including two testimonials and premium offer reading, "For three 50-cent wrappers, or their equivalent in value of other sizes, we will send free of all expense a copy of the handsome picture on the other side, in nine colors, size 16 x 25 inches, without any advertising upon it whatever. The original painting is one of the latest works of the celebrated artists, Ida Waugh, and is a handsome work of art. - Description
- Complementary testimonial trade cards, probably originally attached as one item, containing portraits of babies who consumed Eskay's Food manufactured by Smith, Kline & French. First card shows a rosy-cheeked, plump baby, attired in a white gown, and seated on a chair. Advertising text below the image reads "'We put baby on a prominent artificial food which constipated him and reduced his weight that we had to abandon it. At two months old he was a mere skeleton. We commenced the use of Eskay's food and you can see that he is the picture of health.' Mrs. G. J. Gesemyer, Phila., Pa." Second card shows "Jasper Ewing Brady 3d - a typical Eskay's Food baby - son of Capt. J. E. Brady, U.S.A.," rosy-cheeked and attired in a white gown with pink ribbon adornments at his collar. Testimonial text below image reads " 'During November, 1898, he was in Santiago de Cuba and Eskay's food was the means of preserving his life. We have used it continuously since." Third card shows a rosy-cheeked, plump baby, attired only in a diaper, and propped up. Promotional text below image reads " 'You can see by this picture how well Eskay's food has agreed with our boy. He has taken this Food since his birth and we have never had any trouble of any kind. He has always been perfectly healthy.' Mrs. H. S.
