The sheds erected in the late 17th century at Front and Market streets, extended to Eighth Street in 1816, and were removed between 1859 and 1860. A man and two boys stand at the opening of the shed. Businesses lining the block include J.M. Maris & Co., drug manufacturer; Edwin Hardt's dining saloon; and H. Extended to Eighth Street in 1816, the Market Street sheds were condemned as an impediment to trade and travel and were razed soon after this photograph was taken. Neighboring businesses, such as prominent Philadelphia drug manufacturer J.M. Maris & Co., visible in this view, previously promoted the sheds because the adjacent storefronts reaped the financial benefits of customers attracted by the market., HSP holds copy with text pasted on verso titled "Farewell Address of the Market Houses."
