Description: Photograph album compiled by James B. Nicholson containing predominantly portrait photographs of prominent local and national members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and their families, including men, women, and children. Photographs depict full-length, bust-length, and vignette portraits; group portraiture; and collages. Several male sitters wear the regalia of the Odd Fellows and most sitters are fashionably attired. Group portraiture depicts employees of Pawson and Nicholson in front of the bookbinding shop (139 S. Seventh), and rosters and meetings and excursions of members of the fraternal organization (1870s-1880s), including Warrior Lodge, no. 873. Collages include portraits of the Rulafson family of San Francisco and examples of work from the respected photographic firm Bradley & Rulafson. He was also a prominent member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows serving as a Grand Sire (1863-1864), grand scribe, and grand secretary (1863-1901), as well as authored "I.O.O.F.: The Story of 65 or The History of the Grand Lodge of the United States... (1896)." He married Adelaide Broadnix (b. ca. 1822) in 1841 and with her had three sons, Colonel John Page (1842-1922), Howard B. (b. ca. 1855) and bookbinder Clarence S. Nicholson (b. ca. 1858) and a daughter Eliza (b. ca. 1852).

Description: Album of predominantly landscape photographs of the Delaware Valley and upstate New York taken by Philadelphia amateur photographer John C. Browne. Contents include views of Tacony, Cobb’s, Chester, and Pennypack Creeks; Germantown; Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon; Media, Dauphin, and Hamburg, Pa.; and Dutchess County and Newburgh, N.Y. Views also show estates, including S. H. Lloyd Garden on School House Lane and the W.C. Kent residence (Germantown), Mount Pleasant (Fairmount Park), Henry W. Sargent’s estate (Wodenthe) in Fishkill on the Hudson, and Presqu’ile (built 1813, Dutchess County, N.Y.); churches, including St. Timothy’s (built 1862, Roxborough) and St. Luke’s (Matteawan, Beacon, N.Y.); bridges, including the Norristown Railroad Bridge, Ridge Avenue Bridge, and the P.R.R. St. Luke's image also shows parishioners entering the church., Mount Pleasant Mansion was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Title: John Dickinson papers
Description: This collection documents John Dickinson's roles in politics, business, law, nation building, and the American Revolution. The collection is arranged in two series: "John Dickinson" and "Mary Norris Dickinson," with the bulk of the collection contained within the "John Dickinson" series. This collection was organized into its current arrangement, probably in 1978. Prior to that, the collection was described to an item level in a calendar created by John H. Powell. While the 1978 re-arrangement has resulted in the physical order of the calendar being unusable, the information contained therein is of the utmost value and a pdf version of the calendar is attached to this finding aid.

Title: Sanitary Fairs Collection, 1749-1867 (bulk 1864)
Description: The Sanitary Fairs Collection consists largely of ephemera and manuscripts documenting the efforts made by citizens to raise awareness and funds for the United States Sanitary Commission. Most of the material is from the Great Central Fair held in Philadelphia in June 1864, and includes circulars letters, forms, handbills, correspondence, and miscellaneous printed material generated by the various committees set up to collect objects and financial donations for the fair, and to arrange and staff the fair's sales booths and exhibits. Two additional folders of material for the Relics, Curiosities, and Autographs committee have examples of the autographs (dating 1749-1851) that were sold at their booth and remain in their special printed enclosures from the fair. The collection holds the correspondence files of one particular office, the Committee for Labor, Incomes and Revenues, whose chair and treasurer were, respectively, Philadelphia merchants L. Montgomery Bond and John W. Claghorn. The collection also contains limited ephemera from fairs in Albany, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Elmira, Indianapolis, New York, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Muscatine, Iowa., The McAllister Collection's Ribbons and Textiles Collection (McA 100090.F) holds a box of ribbons and badges from the Great Central Fair. The Library Company's Anne Hampton Brewster Papers has an Abraham Lincoln manuscript, with attendant donor correspondence and certificate, which Brewster acquired at the Great Central Fair's New Jersey Department, Arms and Trophies Table. The Library Company and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania each have a full run of the Great Sanitary Fair's newspaper, Our daily fare, which was published from Wednesday, June 8, through Tuesday, June 21, 1864., John A. Title: Ribbons & Textiles Collection. 1832-1880 (inclusive)
Description: Series I, Politics (1840-1880) holds campaign, commemorative, and mourning ribbons for a variety of politicians. Series II, Celebrations, Organizations, and People (1832-1862) is arranged in those three subseries, and holds printed and woven commemorative ribbons printed to be worn in honor of events, societies, and men. Series III, Civil War and Patriotic Themes (1860-1878) has a wider variety of formats and material, and includes dress fabrics printed with patriotic legends and iconography. Series IV, Relics (1861-1862), holds fabric fragments which purport to have historic significance: pieces of the Secession flag torn down by Col. E. E. Ellsworth at the start of the war; a fragment from a banner flown by a ship from Georgia that entered Boston Harbor in April 1861; and a small piece of a flag from the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. Series V, Great Central Fair (1864) contains a variety of ribbons and textile badges from Philadelphia's Sanitary Fair.
