A memoir of Harriet Ware (Providence, 1850), frontispiece., Harriet Ware was an educator and philanthropist who founded the Providence Children’s Friend Society after retiring as a teacher at Indian Point, a suburb of Providence., “She seldom allowed herself to sit many minutes without work of some kind in her hands. While entertaining callers and friends, knitting was her most common employment, and, even while intensely interested in conversation, her needles would be flying, as if impelled by some unseen power. Knitting work came at length to be called her ‘coat of arms;’ and in the daguerreotype portrait, a copy of which was taken only at the urgent request of her friends, which I believe is to accompany the memoir of her, her knitting work has its appropriate place, and may serve as a fit emblem of the homely virtues which she honored and practiced.”--P. 129-30.

Cut the lining three-quarters of an inch larger than the outside all round, turn over and stich through, over seam the backs together and sew to the soles--round them out a little to shape the heel, stitch it each side of the seam to the sole flaps which are turned up at the heel. Old material of any color or pattern that will make a warm slipper will answer. ... The patterns and directions furnished gratis by Henry C. Blair, druggist, Southwest corner of Eighth and Walnut Sts., Philadelphia. Persons at a distance will receive them by mail on sending a post office stamp, with their address. Slippers sent to H.C. The government wants men; and money must be used to secure them. I trust I am well enough known to you to merit your confidence in my present undertaking. Collis This regiment is being actively recruited under the call from the governor of Pennsylvania, in response to the president's proclamation, for immediate active service. A fund which it is desired to increase to $5000, is being raised by subscription to furnish recruits an additional bounty for the support of their families until their pay from the government is received. At the request of the officers of the regiment, Henry C. Townsend, No. 811 Arch Street, has consented to act as treasurer of this fund, which will be used only for the purpose indicated, and as directed by the colonel of the regiment. The contribution of the patriotic is earnestly solicited

Title: Civil War Volunteer Saloons and Hospitals Ephemera Collection. 1861-1868 (inclusive)
Description: The Civil War Volunteer Saloons and Hospitals Ephemera Collection holds ephemera and a few pieces of correspondence (including letters to and from Samuel Bradford Fales, William M. Cooper, and Arad Barrows) that illustrate and describe the workings of the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, and both of their hospitals. The ephemera is somewhat similar for each group, and consists primarily of donation acknowledgements, event tickets and programs, flyers, and circular letters that the committees used to raise funds., At the start of the American Civil War, thousands of enlisted men from the northeast arrived in Philadelphia on their way to fight in the South. No government or military agencies had made provisions for feeding or caring for these transients, so Philadelphians citizens founded the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. Both saloons opened for service in late May 1861. At no charge to the servicemen, they provided meals, newspapers, bathing facilities, changes of underwear and socks, and assistance in writing letters to families. Between them, the saloons operated twenty-four hours a day and depended solely on contributions of time and goods from neighborhood citizens and merchants. Those donations were supplemented by funds raised at a benefit fairs, concerts, and lectures held around the city, some of which benefited both organizations.
