Willow Grove Avenue and Main St., Chestnut Hill, opposite the hospital, were he takes photographs and ambrotypes of the latest improved styles. He would invite all those wishing photographs or ambrotypes to send away in letters, to call and examine his stock of pictures before going elsewhere. Satisfaction guarantied. Description: Full-length portrait photograph by African American photographer Gallo W. Cheston depicting an African American man in a light-colored militia uniform. The man stands, turned slightly toward the right. He holds a long rifle in front of himself with his gloved hands. His left foot is slightly in front of his right. His uniform includes a Shako cap; jacket with epaulettes, buttons, and service stripes; shoulder strap marked "4"; belt; and pants with a dark vertical stripe down the leg. The tip of a rifle and holster is seen below his back. Portrait also includes, to the man's left, a pulled-back drape propped up on a pedestal. Description: Album of snapshots showing the Logan family residence Loudoun erected for Thomas Armat (photographer's great grandfather) in 1800 at 4650 Germantown Avenue and Stenton, the Logan family country seat at 4601 North Eighteenth Street in Germantown. Contains interior views of Loudoun depicting the parlor and a bedroom. Also includes views of the Stenton grounds showing a wood pile, a hay stack, and rafts of lumber floating down a creek, possibly Wingohocking and portraiture, including an image of the photographer at her camera outside of the Stenton residence. Furniture and interior decoration includes arm chairs, settes, tables, framed paintings, chandeliers, fireplaces, sculpted busts, desks, mantlepieces, lamps, framed photographs, and plates. Also contains a portrait of her brother Albanus Charles; a group portrait, including the photographer, Albanus, and a woman identified as C. Description: Collection of cased photographs of sitters related to cabinet maker Frederick Gutekunst, his son and photographer Frederick Gutekunst, and his son-in-law and photographer Jacob Haldt. Majority of the sitters (men, women, and children) are unidentified. Identified sitters include Frederick L. Gutekunst, and Katherine (Katie) Gutekunst, son and daughter of photographer Gutekunst, photographer Jacob Haldt, and Tomas Hernandes, “the friend who was with Mr. Peale since he came to Pto [ Puerto] Rico until the last moment.” Includes bust, half, three-quarter, and full-length portraits with sitters mostly posed seated. Many of the women sitters wear long-sleeved dresses with collars. Some images also include a scenic backdrop (P.2020.12.13) or depict props, including side tables and a book on which an unidentified girl leans as she sits on a table (P.2020.12.11).
