- Racist trade card promoting stove manufacturer Cribben, Sexton & Co. and depicting a genre scene with African American caricatures originally created for Harper’s Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." Figures are portrayed with exaggerated features. Shows two African American men (i.e., the suitors of the twins) at the start of a duel in a field between two trees. The suitor with a squat figure is in the right, attired in black shoes, red and white striped pants, a brown vest, and a yellow jacket, and stands with his face looking up. The tall suitor in the left is attired in black shoes, red and white striped pants, a white collared shirt, and a blue jacket, and has one hand behind his head. They point guns at each other. An African American man (witness), attired in a brown pants, a green jacket, and a black hat, stands behind the tree in the foreground and another, in a red suit, sits behind the tree in the background. An older African American man sits behind the standing observer with his medical bag labeled “Dr. Black.” He reaches into it with one hand while holding a medicine bottle in the other. - Early edition of the popular matching and memory card game designed by Ann Abbot and composed of four suits of five cards (Busby, Doll, Mr. Ninny-Come-Twitch, and Gardener). Suits are denoted with a different pictorial detail in the upper right corner: a mortar and pestle; pan of milk; an eye; and a spade. "The Improved and Illustrated Game of Dr. Busby" first published in 1843 purportedly sold over 15,000 copies in 18 months. - Group portrait depicts Dr. John Herbert Mudgett and four African American physicians, posed, standing and seated, on the steps outside the entryway to the hospital and training school. In the right, two physicians, attired in dark-colored suits and ties, stand next to Mudgett and the other men seated on the stairs. One of the physicians also wears a mustache. They look past the photographer. In the center, Mudgett, grey-haired, wearing glasses, and attired in a white suit with bow tie, sits on the outer edge of the middle stair. He looks past the photographer and his hands are clasped and rest in his lap. To his right, another two physicians sit next to him on the stairs. They are attired in dark-colored suits with either a tie or bow tie. One physician wears glasses. They rest their hands and/or arms on the upper part of their bent legs. They look at the photographer. The visible shoes of the men are shined, except Mudgett’s which are scuffed. View also shows a boot scraper near the foot of Mudgett, at the base of the steps, and in the right, the sign reading "Dr. Mudgett’s Private Hospital" adorning the wall of the building., Dr. J. H. Mudgett’s Private Hospital and Training School for Nurses was established by New Hampshire-born white (per census records) physician John H. Mudgett and chartered in 1919. Mudgett served as the medical director of surgery. In 1921, the school was one of a number of nursing schools advertised in the "Evening Public Ledger" as offering "Free Tuition, Board, Lodging, and a Nominal Fee" to be trained as a nurse. Mudgett, graduated Dartmouth Medical School in 1896 and resided in Philadelphia as a physician by circa 1905. By 1925, he was listed as only a physician with no listing for the training school. Mudgett, a member of the First African Baptist Church, died in 1945. At the time of his death he was in a multiracial marriage with Adeline Mudgett (1889-1958), a former dressmaker. He stands before two tombstones, and a skeleton holding a pill bottle dances next to him. Calling him "old Lotion" could refer to the cleansing before medical procedures or to drinking alcoholic beverages. - Anti-Davis cartoon invoking the travesties at Confederate war prisons to satirize the incarcerated former Confederate president as a pompous, sniveling ingrate. Shows Davis, attired in a suit, and his feet shackled, in his cell, in front of a table containing his modest meal and complaining to the prison doctor. He bemoans his being unaccustomed to such living and that "you must order some more healthy food, or I shall starve to death." The doctor responds it is "good healthy food, such as our soldiers are fed on" and that their recent achievements prove it is "tolerably healthy." In the left, an older African American man cook, portrayed in racist caricature, announces in the vernacular "Massa Jeff! de dinner is ready." - Racist trade card promoting Dr. J.C. Ayer & Co.’s Cathartic Pills and depicting a caricature of an older African American man doctor administering Ayer’s pills to an infant girl on his lap. Shows the African American man with white hair and a white beard, attired in spectacles, a brown hat, a white collared shirt, a brown bow tie, a green waistcoat, a green jacket, green pants, and black shoes. He sits on a wooden chair and holds an infant African American girl, attired in a red dress with yellow polka dots and a white collar, on his lap. In his left hand he carries a box filled with white pills, and in his right hand he holds a single white pill. The infant carries a pamphlet labeled "Ayer’s pills" in her hands. In the left, a barefooted African American boy, attired in a blue and white checked shirt and orange and yellow striped overalls, kneels beside the chair and looks on. On the ground in front of the boy is an open medicine bag labeled “Dr. Bolus” and filled with containers labeled, Ayers. James Cook Ayer (1818-1878) was a successful patent medicine manufacturer who estabished a factory in Lowell, Mass. After his death, J.C. Ayer & Co. continued to manufacture medicine under the management of his brother Frederick Ayer (1822-1918). The disorders which they are designed to cure, and for which they prove a sure remedy, are all caused by the derangement of one or more of the digestive and assimilative organs, and include constipation or costiveness, indigestion, dyspepsia, biliousness, heartburn, loss of appetite, flatulency, foul stomach, nausea, dizziness, headache, numbness, jaundice, diarrhoea, dysentery, and disorders of the liver. Eruptions and skin diseases, and piles, when the result of indigestion or constipation, are cured by the use of Ayer’s pills. They are, also, often the best remedy for rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, dropsy, kidney complaints, and other disorders arising from a reduced condition of the system, or the obstruction of its functions. In colds they operate beneficially by opening the pores, removing inflammatory secretions, and allaying fever. Ayer’s pills are made of vegetable ingredients only, and may be administered even to children with perfect safety. They are sugar-coated, and pleasant to take; and for all the purposes of a cathartic medicine they are unequalled. Ayers’ pills are usually put up in oval wooden boxes; but for hot and damp climates, and for export, in sealed glass vials, as above represented. - Tenth scene in a racist series of African American caricatures originally created for Harper's Weekly in 1878 by Sol Eytinge that satirized the courtship and marriage of and the start of families by "The Twins." The African American figures are depicted with exaggerated features and mannerisms. Shows the tall husband of one of the twins, twin babies in hand, arriving at the home of the other twin and her husband after the birth of their twins. In the right, the twin lies in bed under the covers as “Dr. Black” turns to the entryway and prepares to give her a spoonful of medicine. Near them is the bed-ridden twins' husband, seated and feeding one baby twin a bottle as the other rocks in a cradle. To his right, the “grandmother,” attired in a bonnet, glasses, polka dot dress, and apron raises her hands in excitement as she greets the arriving husband of the twin's sister.
