Title: Town & plantation of the Fulahs
Description: Engraving shows an aerial view of a Fulah town and plantation. According to the text, villages of the Fulahs differed in their arrangement from those of other West African nations: "Their streets are broad and regular, and their houses, though only of clay, and roofed with straw, are always kept very clean and neat by the women. These villages are surrounded by lofty palisades, within which they grow the cotton that they manufacture themselves into cloth. On the outside of these enclosures are, on the one hand, the plantations of maize, and other kinds of grain; and on the other, the cattle, driven from the rich pastures where they graze in the day, are penned, for security, during the night. In the centre of this space stands a watch house, which enables their keepers the more easily to perceive the approach of robbers, or rapacious beasts. Description: This woodcut is one of the earliest known illustrations of sugar making in the New World. In the right foreground, two slaves gather and strip stalks of sugar cane. Title: Tread-wheel
Description: Under the overseer's whip, a group of Jamaican slaves power a large tread-wheel that is presumably used in sugar manufacturing. In the foreground, two slaves have collapsed from heat and exhaustion; they are tended to by others. To the left, another overseer flogs a slave while two white men look on. As Phillippo explained, the slave's labor, "under the fervent heat of a tropical sun, was indeed excessive, sufficient, during a comparatively short period of time, to expend the vigour and exhaust the spirits of the strongest and most energetic frame, inasmuch as they had to perform by manual operation those processes, which, in every other country, are performed by horses, oxen, and machinery." Title: Mr. & Mrs. Jay Rial with Rial & Draper's Ideal Uncle Tom's Cabin
Description: Vignette from an advertisement for the touring stage company's production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Contains bust-length portraits of Jay Rial, wearing a beard and attired in a white collared shirt, a brown tie, and brown jacket, and Louise Rial, wearing her hair in curls and attired in a black dress with a gold brooch and a red shawl. Also depicted are brown dogs in recline flanking the portraits of the Rials, a miniature view of a plantation house, and palm leaves. Jay Rial, a New York theatrical manager, began tours of his production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" circa 1881. The production was associated with novel features of live dogs and donkeys and props, such as floating cakes of ice, and was purported to have earned $1,000,000 by the end of its run. Title: [The manner of making sugar in the sugar-mills, Brazil]
Description: Engraving accompanies Section VII. (Bahia de Todos los Sanctos), in which Montanus describes sugar-cane planting and sugar-making in Brazil. Scene features a hydo-powered sugar-mill, which, as Montanus explains, "consist[s] of three great Iron Bars, between which the Canes are squeez'd." Here, under the inspection of two European planters, several slaves feed stalks of sugar cane into the mill. The extracted juice (which Montanus calls Caldo) runs through a gutter into a keetle, where it is boiled. Afterwards, the sugary syrup is boiled a second and third time until nears the consistency of sugar. As Montanus noted, the "dross which remains" is given to the slaves, "which work for half a year together Night and Day like Horses." The area of Cuba is 41,655 square miles. The island is long and narrow and follows a curved line through its centre; is 720 miles long and its average breadth is 80 miles. The highest part of the island is the range extending in the southwest from the Punto de Maysi to Cape Cruz. There are mountains immediately above the harbor of Trinidad de Cuba in the south, the highest of which is 2,990 feet above the sea level. The climate is hot on the coast and temperate on the higher levels. Ten per cent of the area is, or was, cultivated. There are large tracts of the island still unexplored. A census taken in 1887 reported the population to be 1,631, 687. Of this, 528,998 were negroes and mulattoes. The present population is uncertain. Probably, as the results of devastating war, it has been cut down at least a fourth. Principal cities are Havana (the capital), Santiago de Cuba, Puerto Principe, Holguin, Sancti Spiritus, Matanzas. Before the insurrection, there were over 1,000 miles of railroad in operation on the island. The chief produce is sugar and tobacco. There is also production of mahogany, fruits, honey and wax. Gold and silver have been found in paying quantities. The iron mines of Cuba, all of which are located near Santiago, overshadow in importance all the other industries on the eastern end of the island. The ore of these mines is among the richest in the world, yielding from 62 to 67 per cent of pure iron. The principal imports are flour, rice and jerked beef. Title: Views in Fairmount Park Philadelphia, 1884
Description: Album containing eight pencil sketched, titled views of prominent sites at Fairmount Park. Includes Belmont Mansion from the East; Mount Pleasant; Tom Moore's Cottage above Columbia Bridge; Belmont Mansion from the West; Gen. Grant's Headquarters; the Elevator, (i.e. observatory) at Lemon Hill; Penna. R.R. Bridge (i.e., Connecting Railway Bridge); and Rockland Landing from Columbia Bridge., Drawing of Mount Pleasant depicts an exterior view of the Mount Pleasant Mansion built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. View shows the front entrance with a large tree in the left. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion.
