Title: A correct view of the City of Philadelphia on the Delaware River as it appeared on 25th of January 1852
Description: Panoramic and bustling, winter view showing several men, women, and children, on the ice-covered river. In the center foreground, a small crowd gathers around a man reading a newspaper as around them, throngs of individuals traverse the frozen walkway, promenade as couples, make conversation, and fall, laugh, and grab one another as they slip on the ice. Several men skate, boys sled, dogs chase each other, and children frolic, including a pair retrieving a hat from a broken patch of ice. Others peddle refreshments from a table and flee from broken ice as ruffians engage in a fist fight. The cityscape of Philadelphia is visible in the background, including Christ Church and Independence Hall in addition to Spark's Shot Tower and Girard College. Description: Advertisement showing children at play in a park setting. In the foreground, two boys, one in a sailor’s outfit, pulls a swing attached to a tree, on which a boy sits and a girl stands. The tree is adorned with a sign that reads “Best Childs Shoe Made.” At the boys' feet, a "Standard Tips" shoebox, with an eye-catching illustrated label lies on the ground. One of a pair of Standard Tips rests on the box, with the other lying next to it with the sole bearing a Harris trademark. In background, two boys play stick ball. Description: Genre winter scene showing male students frolicking in the snow at the east end of the main building of the co-educational Quaker boarding school. Boys build snowmen, have snow ball fights, and sled on the snow-laden grounds covered with footsteps. Westtown was established in 1794 by the Society of Friends as a boarding school for boys and girls. The campus was separated into the girls' and boys' bounds, i.e., yards for recreation. Title: Concentrated leaven or bread powders
Description: Advertisement for baking powder depicting an African American woman cook, portrayed as a racist caricature, displaying her oversized bread to a white woman. In the right, the African American woman, attired in a yellow kerchief, hoop earrings, a red dress with the sleeves rolled up, a white apron, white stockings with red stripes, and yellow shoes, holds a shovel in her left hand and points to the bread with her right hand. The gargantuan bread in the pan rests on a table covered in a white tablecloth alongside other pans of baked goods. Behind the table, the brown-haired, white woman, attired in a white dress with blue stripes with lace at the neck and sleeves, holds her hands up in shock over the over-proved bread. Underneath the table, the cook’s young daughter, attired in a short-sleeved yellow dress, sits on a rug and makes bubbles with a bowl and stick to play with a cat. Description: Advertisement showing the busy street corner at Front and Walnut streets near the Delaware River with a view of the building containing the oil manufactory, and the flour and farina store. The scene is depicted within a lithographed tromp l'oeil wood frame containing an inset of an exterior view of Peck's Works at Dock Street. Delivery wagons and drays traverse the business-lined streets, including one for Peck's driven by an African American man. Pedestrians walk the sidewalks and cross the intersection, and a white boy rolls a hoop past a white woman peddler sewing by her food stand.
