Title: Historical The plan for the organization of the Sunday School Union of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was presented by Rev. C. S. Smith to the Council of Bishops at their annual meeting in Cape May, N. J. August 11, 1882. The bishops approved of the plan, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was appointed corresponding secretary. At the General Conference, which met in Baltimore, MD. May, 1884, the Union was adopted as one of the general departments of the church, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was unanimously elected corresponding secretary of the same. The building now owned and occupied by the Union was purchased February 28, 1888, at a cost of $9,000. The building is situated on the north side of the public square in the city of Nashville, Tenn., and is a handsome five story structure with a solid stone front. The printing department was organized February, 1889, and is known as the publishing house of the A. M. E. Sunday School union. The first book ever issued by a Colored publishing house in the history of the world was issued by the Union, September, 1890, with the title, "Poor Ben." The first Children's Day to be observed in the A. M. E. Church took place on the 4th Sunday in October, 1882

Title: Mr. & Mrs. Jay Rial with Rial & Draper's Ideal Uncle Tom's Cabin
Description: Vignette from an advertisement for the touring stage company's production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Contains bust-length portraits of Jay Rial, wearing a beard and attired in a white collared shirt, a brown tie, and brown jacket, and Louise Rial, wearing her hair in curls and attired in a black dress with a gold brooch and a red shawl. Also depicted are brown dogs in recline flanking the portraits of the Rials, a miniature view of a plantation house, and palm leaves. Jay Rial, a New York theatrical manager, began tours of his production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" circa 1881. Title: The last days of Webster at Marshfield To the family and friends of the late Daniel Webster, this plate, representing a scene from his last days at Marshfield, is most respectfully dedicated by the publishers
Description: Engraving after a painting by Joseph Ames showing family, relatives, and friends gathered around the dying Daniel Webster, who sits in bed propped up against a pillow. Webster, a Whig senator from Massachusetts, died at his home in Marshfield in 1852 after falling from his horse. His attendees, gather around the foot of his bed, including his wife Caroline LeRoy Webster, attired in a white lace veil, who cries with her head in her hand. In the right, a seated, Mrs. Caroline Fletcher Webster gazes at Webster while her son leans against her and a young, white girl rests on a stool at her feet. Description: Historical print based on lore depicting a 1774 meeting in Boston between British Massachusetts Royal Governor General Thomas Gage and a "committee" of boys about British troops infringing their rights by destroying their snow hills and skating ice when unprovoked. Depicts the rotund Gage seated in a palatial drawing room decorated with an ornate rug; damask-style, blue wallpaper; red drapery; a large painted portrait of King George III; a book case; and a fireplace with a mantle adorned with a gold sculpture of the British lion. Gage, in uniform, sits in an arm chair near two of his officers, in uniform. One is seated at a table, covered in a cloth with an ornate design and the other stands next to him. A ledger and sheets of paper rest on the table. A delegation of boys, in long jackets, pantaloons, and tri-corn hats, enters the room through an open door. The lead boy extends his hand toward Gage as the others look at the room, each other, and the royal governor. An African American male servant, attired in a blue jacket and pantaloons and depicted with simian-like features, tends to a fire in the fireplace behind Gage. Title: Ellen Craft, the fugitive slave
Description: Half-length portrait taken circa 1849-50 of Craft attired in the persona of Mr. William Johnson, a young, infirm enslaver. Shows the light-complexioned, multiracial Craft with one arm in a sling and wearing short hair, spectacles, a top hat, a jacket, a shirt, and a cravat. Craft and her husband William escaped slavery in Macon, GA in December 1848 by posing as a planter and his dedicated man servant. The couple arrived in Philadelphia on Christmas Day, relocating to Boston, and later London. Craft wore a sling to conceal her inability to write, as well as a poultice tied to her chin and around her head to further disguise her gender. The allegorical scene depicts the female figure of Columbia, resting upon an American shield and seated next to an American eagle that looks down on a snake it clutches under its claws.
