Title: Hagar & Campbell's Dime Museum, Ninth & Arch Sts. Opens Monday September 3d 1883
Description: Lively advertising print for the dime museum operated by W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell 1883-1885. Shows throngs of people entering the mansard-roofed building, heavily adorned in signage and over 40 pictures of the museum's performers, at the northwest corner of Ninth and Arch Streets. Signs read "Specially Adapted for Ladies & Children: Open Daily from 1 to 10 P.M."; "Curiosities Constantly Arriving From All Parts of the World"; and "Philadelphia's Pleasure Palace Containing Countless Curiosities / Peerless Parlor Peformances." Other signs announce the hours of operation, the museum's purpose for the "instruction and amusement" of ladies and children, and the admission price - 10 cents. Performer's pictures primarily depict human curiosities and include tattooed men and women, a bearded lady, clowns, a two-headed woman, little people, an armless man, a man eating a slate, exotic and native costumed figures, as well as a magician and a ventriloquist. Graphics also show exotic animals and birds. Building also adorned with flags promoting the museum and its attractions, including "birds, beasts, and mechanical marvels." In the street, three street cars (nos. 44, 33, and 26) and one wagon, advertising Hagar & Campbell's, travel and stop in front of the museum. Wagon is composed of billboards illustrated with an image of seven women with floor-length hair and captioned "Seven Wonders of the World.", Also shows adjacent buildings, a crowd of people at the side of the museum, and pedestrians and passersby in the street, on the sidewalk, and near and looking at the street vehicles. Print also contains portraits of owners W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell in the upper corners. By 1884, Campbell and Hagar were officers in the Barnum and London show managing "Privileges." Description: Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Title: Bergner & Engel's Brewery. Office, 412 Library Street. Brewery, 32d and Thompson Sts. Philadelphia Gustavus Bergner. Charles Engel
Description: Advertisement containing a view of the hectic brewery complex in Northwest Philadelphia, i.e. Brewerytown. Complex includes an office building and dwelling (right), two ice houses (built 1865 and 1871, left), brewery plant, sheds, and courtyard. Outside of the plant, several Bergner & Engel horse-drawn wagons loaded with barrels travel in the street. The vehicles pass carriages, a man on horseback, two unoccupied drivers consulting each other, and a man, probably a brewery worker, seated on barrels talking with a man, possibly a job seeker, who has a carpetbag and a dog at his side. On the sidewalk, women, children, and gentlemen stroll, as brewery laborers work around them. Men load a wagon with barrels from one of the ice houses, as others coordinate the wagons (two excited dogs at his sides), carry barrels, and calm a horse at the courtyard entrance. Near the entrance, Mr. Bergner stands outside his office by his parked carriage and listens to an employee. Barrels line the wall of the courtyard. Within the space, loaded company wagons arrive, idle wagons and crate beds are stored, and laborers move barrels, including one from a huge pile on the terrace of the keg washing room attached to the second ice house. A grove of trees borders the complex in the left of the image. The partnership of Bergner & Engel was formed in 1870 at the brewery of Bergner (erected 1857-1858) following the dissolution of the partnership of brewers Wolf & Engel. Title: Marion Hose Company of Philadelphia
Description: Fire company certificate containing a central view, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. Central view shows the company's fire station at Queen Street below Sixth Street. Two men and a dog sit in front of a fenced lot adjacent to the station. Vignettes show volunteers drawing a hand pump past the station in "1857" and a church in "1864"; firefighters battling the "Burning of the Ironsides" at League Island on December 16, 1866; and fighting the blaze from a boiler explosion at "Merrick's Foundry" on April 7, 1864. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hose, helmets, and axes are drawn layered together to form decorative elements in the upper corners. A small oval framed scene of "Marion and the British," semi-draped with an American flag, adorns an arch at the top. The scene shows Continental Army Lieut. Col. Francis Marion's slave Oscar Marion preparing a meal that the officer invited the British to share. Title: In commemoration of the great parade of the Philadelphia Fire Department October 16th 1865 Dedicated to the Philadelphia firemen and their visiting brethren
Description: Commemorative print containing a portrait of Chief Engineer David M. Lyle in uniform and three vignettes. Vignettes show an injured soldier being transported from an ambulance at the Citizens Volunteer Hospital; a horse drawn steam engine; and fire fighters battling a blaze with a steam engine. Also contains a list of over 100 regional fire companies who participated in the parade surrounded by a border designed as fire hoses extending from a fire hydrant. Title: Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, the first opened for Union Volunteers in the United States. 1009 Otsego St. Philadelphia
Description: Print containing an exterior and interior view of the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon situated near the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad station, the transportation hub between the North and the South. Exterior view shows recently arrived troops marching toward and into the saloon passed civilians and intermingling soldiers, including Zouaves. Banners and flags promoting the Cooper Shop and soliciting contributions adorn the saloon buildings. Interior view shows the saloon committee gathered in the dining hall in front of a long table at which soldiers dine. Female volunteers attend to the men who also stand at a dining bar. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. Description: Membership certificate for the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons containing a bust-length portrait vignette of "Bishop White Presdt. 50 Years" and a "bird's-eye view of the Building's-Grounds and Environs" of Eastern State Penitentiary. Filigree surrounds the oval-framed portrait. View shows the prison built 1823-1836 after the designs of John Haviland at 2101-2199 Fairmount Avenue. Individuals walk and a horse-drawn wagon travel within the prison grounds that are surrounded by a brick wall with Gothic-style entrance gate. The grounds include garden plots. Pedestrians, including a man pushing a hand-cart, a carriage, and men on horseback travel in the streets outside of the penitentiary. Description: Print containing two variant specimens of advertisements for the prolific Philadelphia lithographer of mid-19th century advertising prints. Top specimen contains a central vignette and three border vignettes adorned with ornamental details. Central vignette shows a semi-bare breasted Columbia with the shield of the United States and the American eagle. Border vignettes show classical-style portraits of a woman and girl, and an artist at an easel, and a lithographer drawing on stone. Description: Commemorative print containing bust-length portraits, within a decorative border, of the original faculty of the first degree granting U.S. medical college for women that opened in 1850. Faculty includes William S. Mullen, President; N. R. Moseley, Prof. of Anatomy General, Special and Surgical; Jas. F. X. McCloskey, Prof. of the Institutes and Practice of Medicine; Jos. Longshore, Prof. of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children; C. W. Gleason, Prof. of Physiology and Surgery; M. W. Dickeson, Prof. of Materia Medica and Therapeutics; and A. D. Description: Advertisement containing an ornamental border, vignette examples of Kollner's work, and several lines of advertising text for the collaboration between Camp and Kollner at the Phonenix Block circa 1849-1851. Vignettes, marked with variant Kollner imprints, include General Washington, accompanied by two of his officers, and dismounted from a horse that is managed by a black handler (Servant William Lee?); a line drawing of the Phoenix Block building; the back of an old man, possibly Franklin, dressed in colonial attire, and seated at his secretary; and a view showing a grand building, probably a Capitol, along a river on which vessels sail. Border also includes vignettes. Vignettes depict a military scene with an officer on horseback accompanied by another soldier on the shore of an ocean on which a ship sails; and a trade scene between a gentleman and a Native American reviewing a stack of goods of commerce at a pier. Advertisement also contains depictions of female allegorical figures representing probably Spring and Fall flanking two ornamented poles entwined with banners. Title: Order of the United Daughters of America [membership certificate] Honesty, virtue & industry
Description: Membership certificate for the patriotic nativist women's society established in New York in 1845 as an auxilliary to the Order of United Americans. Contains a vignette portrait of Martha Washington flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice perched in a cluster of clouds. Below on each side, columns entwined with the American flag and adorned with the American eagle and shield rest on pedestals decorated with horns of cornucopia. Between the columns, a "United Daughter" leads a little girl to another "United Daughter" who welcomes them into a temple adorned with garlands of flowers. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 19 elegantly attired men and women in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 8 men and two women socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped or plaid pants, long coats tapered at the waist, and bow ties. Some hold top hats and canes. The women wear a bonnet, shirtwaist, and full skirt or a riding habit. Furnishings include a marble pedestal, and mosaic carpeting and wallpaper. Lower panel shows General Zachary Taylor and two military officers, in uniforms and mounted on horses, flanked by 6 male civilians in front of a military training ground. All the plain-clothed men wear top hats, striped or checkered pants, and overcoats or capes. Background includes calvary troops on drill and a cannon. Description: Scene showing Captain George Cadwalader commanding a drill of the mounted artillery troop of the Pennsylvania Militia on a large field near Powelton in West Philadelphia. Shows, in the foreground, Cadwalader, seated on his stead, and signaling a change of formation with his raised saber. Two officers, one blowing a bugle, trot behind him between two lines of men mounted on horses, seated in horse-drawn carriages, or pulling canons by horse-team. Other men on mounts, in carriages, and pulling cannons have broken from the old formation and fan out alongside the lines. The militia men wear blue uniforms comprised of trousers, jackets with epaulets, and tall shakos with plumes. In the background, clusters of trees and a residence with fenced property are visible. Description: Membership certificate containing an image depicting a bust of author, statesman, and ninth attorney general of the United States, William Wirt, on a pedestal inscribed with the text "William Wirt Library and Literary Institute, founded March 18th, 1834." Books with "United States," "Rome," and "Greece," written on the spines rest in front of an allegorical female figure that sits next to the monument. On the left, an eagle perched on an olive branch grasps a banner with a Greek phrase written on it. A charter, laurel wreath, and several books written by Wirt, including "Old Bachelor," "Life of P. Henry," "Spy" and "Speeches," lie on the ground in front of the eagle. In the background stands a decrepit pediment from an old Grecian building. Depicts Nicholas Grevelet's 1827 sandstone relief "William Penn's Treaty with the Indians" and Enrico Causici's 1826-1827 sandstone relief "Conflict of Daniel Boone and the Indians." Shows William Penn's treaty of 1682 for Pennsylvania as a peaceful interaction with Native Americans in contrast to Daniel Boone in violent combat with Native Americans on the frontier. The treaty scene depicts Penn holding the treaty while shaking hands with a Native American holding a pipe. In the background, another Native American holds his hand up in the sign of peace in front of two doves sitting in a tree. The Boone scene shows Boone brandishing a rifle and knife during a violent struggle with a Native American holding a tomahawk. The men fight over a fallen Native American.
