In Morrell, A.J. Narrative of a voyage to the Ethiopic and South Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Chinese Sea, North and South Pacific Ocean, in the years 1829, 1830, 1831 (New York, 1833), frontispiece., At age fifteen, Abigail Jane Wood Morrell, known as Abby, married her sea captain cousin Benjamin Morrell, Jr. She accompanied him on a multi-year voyage aboard the schooner Antarctic. In 1831, they returned to New York, in debt. To raise money, Benjamin organized a stage show entitled “Two Cannibals of the Islands of the South Pacific.” The firm J. & J. Harper published their journals as monographs; Benjamin’s was ghostwritten by Samuel Woodworth, and Abby’s was ghost-written by Samuel L. George W. Norris was a Library Company board member from 1840-1874. He was a Philadelphia surgeon and author and editor of books on historical medicine. He served as president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, vice-president of the Philadelphia Medical Society, vice-president of the College of Physicians, vice-president of the AMA, and an associate of the Academy of Natural Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.
Portrait of Benjamin Franklin set into a gold frame with ribbon surmount, the foliate pierced and enameled border set with enameled urns and basket decorated with seed pearls, the reverse glazed to reveal the counter-enamel. The portrait is one of five extant versions and the jeweled setting is most likely contemporary and commissioned so that the image could be worn as a pendant. Weyler painted this portrait as a part of a series of miniatures he called “Panthéon Iconographique,” which included famous men he wanted to preserve for posterity in enamel. Franklin was the most popular of the series’ subjects. Interior view shows the saloon committee gathered in the dining hall in front of a long table at which soldiers dine. Female volunteers attend to the men who also stand at a dining bar. Also shows officers dining at a smaller table to the right next to an unidentified woman, possibly Mrs. William M. Cooper, posed near the committee. The names of the thirty committee members are printed below the image. The Saloon, established in 1861 in the old cooperage of William M. Cooper & Co., was a volunteer relief agency that provided meals, hospital care, washing, sleeping, and writing facilities to over 400, 000 military personnel, refugees, and freedmen., Depicted committee members include S.W.
