Title: Ellen Craft, the fugitive slave
Description: Half-length portrait taken circa 1849-50 of Craft attired in the persona of Mr. William Johnson, a young, infirm enslaver. Shows the light-complexioned, multiracial Craft with one arm in a sling and wearing short hair, spectacles, a top hat, a jacket, a shirt, and a cravat. Craft and her husband William escaped slavery in Macon, GA in December 1848 by posing as a planter and his dedicated man servant. The couple arrived in Philadelphia on Christmas Day, relocating to Boston, and later London. Craft wore a sling to conceal her inability to write, as well as a poultice tied to her chin and around her head to further disguise her gender. The chin poultice was "left off in the engraving, because the likeness could not have been taken well with it on" (Craft, 35). His early work was displayed and awarded at amateur exhibitions at John Wanamaker’s and the Philadelphia Y.M.C.A. Camera club. He attended Army Schools of Photography at Rochester and Cornell University and served in the Photographic Section of the Air Service during World War I. Draucker was also featured in "Studio Light: A Magazine of Information for the Profession" (1930) and copyrighted a photoflash calculator in 1937. He was married to Lucretia Draucker and passed away in San Diego, Ca. in January 1971.

Description: Glass negative showing Marriott Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris, Fannie Garrett, Fred Strawbridge, and Helen Morris, possibly Marriott Morris' third cousin, posed in front of the carved railing of the Morris family home Avocado's porch. Helen Morris and Garrett sit in the center while Strawbridge stands behind them. Elizabeth Morris sits on the grass in front of the group with a parasol on the ground next to her. Strawbridge wears a suit jacket and hat. The women wear long white dresses and Elizabeth Morris wears a hat. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death.
