Also contains several lines of promotional text describing Whalebone's excellent performances including an 1827 New York trotting course race, which "he accomplished in 54 minutes & 6 seconds with great ease"; his defeat of Creeper, Lady Kate, Grey Squirrel & Moonshine on May 15, 1828 in a Hunting Park Association race worth $200; his victory over Mr. Spicer in another Hunting Park Association course on October 15, 1829, in which he ran 16 miles in 4 mile heats in the unprecedented time of 46 minutes & 11 seconds, and performed the third heat in 11 minutes and 17 seconds; another Hunting Park Association victory on October 23, 1830, winning a purse of $300 for "beating Sir Peter, Jerry, Comet & Top Gallant, and distancing all on the 4th heat"; his defeat of the Calf, Comet and Sir Andrew, winning the 2nd and 3rd heats (the Calf took the first) on the Union Course Long Island on December 6, 1830; his victory over Sweet Brier on the Hunting Park Course, where he won each mile except the 2nd and the 5th; and his performance of 8 minutes 20 seconds in a 2nd 3 mile heat in harness on the Hunting Park course on October 14, 1829. Title: " Pushmobiles lined up for a race, G[erman]t[ow]n
Description: Panoramic view showing several boys, attired in hats, coats, and often goggles, in pushmobiles lined on each side of a residential street in preparation for a race. Boys stand behind the vehicles, while men, including a police officer and likely officials, walk and convene at the other end of the street. Many of the pushmobiles are numbered and some are named, including one with the moniker "Otto." Description: Portfolio containing three prints depicting African American men jockeys, portrayed in racist caricature, speaking in the vernacular, and attired in long underwear, during key moments from a two-mile heat at the Washington Race Course in Charleston, South Carolina. Pl. 1 shows the beginning of the race with three jockeys reigning in and spurring on their horses. Caption reads: At the tap of the drum they jump off from the stand, Be the track deep in mud or heavy with sand, At a pace which at once makes fast ones extend, An e'en the best winded cry bellows to mend. Title: St. Jacobs Oil, "it conquers pain"
Description: Racist trade card illustration promoting St. Jacobs Oil, a pain relieiving remedy, and depicting one white and one African American male jockey competing with one another. The African American jockey is attired in a, collared shirt, a yellow and orange striped sweater, white pants, white gloves, a red and white cap, and black boots. He holds his whip in his right hand and his horses reins in his left hand. His dark brown horse kicks its hind legs up toward the man and his carriage, causing the man to frown fearfully and hold his right hand to his forehead. The white jockey is attired in a white collared shirt, a red tie, a blue sport jacket, a blue and yellow cap, yellow gloves, and white pants. He holds his light brown horse's reins in both hands and a whip in his right. The African American man is depicted with exaggerated features. St. Jacobs Oil was invented by August Vogeler, a German immigrant, his son Charles A., and John H. Winkleman after 1878. Charles A. Title: Kendall's Spavin Cure
Description: Trade card promoting B.J. Kendall Company, manufacturer of proprietary medicine, and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man jockey portrayed with exaggarated features. Shows the jockey at the reins of a brown race horse running at full speed, its legs lifted off the ground, and two of its shoes flying through the air. The jockey grips the reins of the horse over which he is prone and suspended above. He exclaims in the vernacular, "I only ’plied jist six bottles of Kendall’s Spavin Cure...so he can go in 2:05 3-8. Gwine to put on two bottles more, and den he can go in jist 1:51 7-16." The jockey is attired in a red buttoned jacket and red plaid pants. His red and white striped jockey's cap and one of his black boots have flown off and trail behind him. In the background a wooden fence lines the grounds. An African American man with exaggarated features attired in blue pants and a red plaid shirt and with his mouth open and arms raised in alarm stands within the entryway to the fence. A wooden sign posted on the fence reads, "2.05 3/8." Burney James Kendall (1845-1922) founded the B.J. Kendall Company in Enosburg Falls, Vermont in 1879. Kendall Company was incorporated in 1883. Description: Trade card promoting B.J. Kendall Company, manufacturer of proprietary medicine and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man jockey portrayed with exaggerated features. Kendall Company in Enosburg Falls, Vermont in 1879. Kendall Company was incorporated in 1883. The success of Kendall’s Spavin Cure spurred the firms line of products to expand to proprietary medicines for other animals in addition to people. I had him under the charge of two veterinary surgeons who failed to cure him. I was only one day reading the advertisement of Kendall's Spavin Cure in the Chicago Express. I determined at once to try it, and got our druggists here to send for it; they ordered three bottles; I took them all and thought I would give it a thorough trial; I used it according to directions, and the fourth day the colt ceased to be lame, and the lumps have disappeared. I used but one bottle and the colt's limbs are as free from lumps and as smooth as any horse in the state. He is entirely cured. Description: Cartoon depicting the presidential election of 1844 as a steeple chase race to the White House. Henry Clay, guided by the American eagle as he laments about the death of Harrison, leads the chase atop his half-horse/half-alligator mount. He is followed by: Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster, uneager to leave his cooking cauldron of "Chowder"; South Carolina Senator John C. Calhoun, astride his "nullification Coota Turtle," which is stuck in a "Clay Bank"; former President Van Buren, on a fox, taking a "crooked and dirty" shortcut to avoid Calhoun; an "Old Solider," possibly James K. Polk attempting to "turn" his donkey to the "right way"; Richard M. Title: The great November contest. Patriotism vs bummerism
Description: Racist cartoon depicting the 1868 Presidential Election as a carriage race between the "patriotic" Democrats and the "bum" Republicans who support Reconstruction. Depicts the elegant Democratic carriage with the banner "This is a White Man's Government" pulled by the horses with the heads of Horatio Seymour and Francis P. Blair racing passed the stalled Republican wagon steered by the asses with the heads of nominees Ulysses Grant and Schuyler Colfax. In the Democrats' carriage are four allegorical figures: Liberty, depicted as a white woman holding the Constitution and a banner which reads "Our Glorious Union Distinct, like the Billows, One, Like the Sea' This is a White Man's Government!"; Navigation, depicted as a white woman holding a miniature ship; Agriculture, depicted as a white woman holding sheaves of wheat and a scythe; and Labor, represented by a bearded white man with a hammer and flywheel. Title: Handicap race presidential stakes 1844
Description: Satire of the presidential election of 1844 depicting the potential candidates; Whig Henry Clay, and Democrats Martin Van Buren, Lewis Cass, John Calhoun, Richard M. Johnson, and John Tyler on various mounts racing for the White House. Clay riding a racoon leads the pack claiming that no one can overtake him. Van Buren follows riding a fox and holding a weather vane labeled "N" (North) and "S" (South) with the slogans "Free Trade Texas" and "Abolition Oregon" attached. He acknowledges that Lewis Cass is closing in. Cass on his hound gloats that he has finally overtaken the "old fox." Calhoun, positioned fourth, rides a lion with an enslaved African American man and child, portrayed in racist caricature, on his shoulders and bemoans his extra weight. Johnson, on foot and holding a hook, follows Calhoun stating he will "hook on" to whomever gets in. Title: The great presidential race of 1856
Description: Cartoon ridiculing the Democratic and American (Know-Nothings) Party presidential candidates James Buchanan and Millard Fillmore by depicting them in a race to win the election of 1856. Depicts Buchanan having crashed his mount (i.e, running mate John C. Breckenridge depicted as a buck) into a rickety platform marked "Democratic Platform," Slavery," and "Cuba." An enslaved African American man, portrayed with racistly caricaturized features, and wearing shackles on his ankles and worn and torn clothes, shoes, and a hat, stands upon and ridicules the "Democratic Platform." Buchanan angrily replies, "You infernal Black Scoundrel, if it had not been for you and that cursed Slavery Plank that Scared and upset my Buck, I should have won this race certain." Following Buchanan is Fillmore using his running mate Andrew Jackson Donelson, depicted as a goose, as his mount. Fillmore, the American Party candidate, carries a "Know-Nothing" lamp and fears his loss will dissolve the Union. In the distance, the Republican candidate John C. Fremont pulls ahead to the cheers of many of the spectators. Brother Jonathan, (predecessor of Uncle Sam), stands on an observation or judging deck and carries a timer’s watch. Additional spectators include white men belittling Fillmore as "spineless" and a "goose," and a white boy holding a sign inscribed, "We Po'ked Em in 44; We Pierced Em in 52; and We'll 'Buck Em' in 56."
