- Aerial view of the Wall Rope Works factory plant at Railroad Avenue and Mt.Holly Road in Beverly, New Jersey. Wall Rope Works was an industrial complex of national importance. The heart of the factory was its ropewalk, a long narrow building where strands of material were laid and twisted into rope. The 1,700 foot-long facility was the largest in the U.S. The company supplied rope products for the military beginning with the Spanish-American War; its products were used in the construction of the Kennedy Space Center. - Aerial views of the Leeds and Northrup plant and laboratory in the Nicetown-Tioga section of Philadelphia. The company was founded by Morris E. Leeds and Edwin F. Northrup in 1903. Originally known as Morris E. Leeds & Company, the organization produced electrical measuring instruments for laboratory and testing use and was an important supplier of this equipment to industrial markets. In the late 1990's, the company became the L&N Metallurgical Products Company. - Description
- Aerial views of airplane hangars under construction at the site of what is now Philadelphia International Airport. Starting in 1925 the Pennsylvania National Guard used the site (known as Hog Island) as a training airfield. The site was dedicated as the "Philadelphia Municipal Airport" by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, but it had no proper terminal building until 1940. 5924 shows a view of the hangars from southwest to northeast along Island Avenue. 5926 shows a slightly more distant view from west to east including the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as well as the hangers under construction. The company was formed In 1900 when the JP Morgan & Company undertook a consolidation of the bridge construction industry in the United States. This merger of 27 companies commanded 90 percent of the bridge building market in the U.S. Eventually, the American Bridge Company became a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Corporation.
