Title: Library Company of Philadelphia Menus and Culinary History Collection
Description: Menus and ephemera related to Philadelphia restaurants, including announcements and invitations, mid-19th century. The collection was started with menus from the John A. McAllister collection and additional menus have accrued over the years. Most significantly, in 1984, Charles E. Rosenberg donated eleven menus from the anniversary dinners of the Shakespeare Society, dating from 1855 to 1874. The collection is open to new additions.

Title: Menu collection, 1837-1899
Description: The collection consists one hundred twenty-six menus primarily from the second half of the 19th century, from Philadelphia. Includes menus from celebrations and anniversaries as well as standard bills of fare. Among the restaurants included are Parkinson's, the Continental Hotel, Merchant's Hotel, and Ebbitt House. Some menus are from Civil War commemorations. Outside of the Philadelphia area, there are menus from New York, Chicago, Niagara Falls, and Syracuse, as well as several menus from the Holland-America liner S.S. Ryndam., The collection was started with menus from the John A. McAllister collection and additional menus have accrued over the years. Most significantly, in 1984, Charles E. The green and gold menu cover depicts a Chinese woman, attired in a dress and high-heeled shoes, raising her left hand to her chin as she faces the viewer. She stands on a balcony or bridge overlooking a landscape of trees and mountains under a moonlit sky. The menu is in English and organized by number in sections for “Wines and Liquors” (#1-167); “Chinese Menu” (#1-179); and “American Menu” (#181-383). Description: Menu depicting an exterior view of the Far East Chinese Restaurant at 907-909 Race Street, Philadelphia built after the designs of Thomas Ustick Walter in ca. 1827 and later altered with 907 raised one story and 909 raised two stories. There are Chinese architectural details on the balcony and awning which reads, 907 Far East Chinese Cafe. The balconies are decorated with lanterns and plants. Two American flags and a Chinese Republic National Flag are on flagpoles on the restaurant. The cover has a border of bamboo plants. Title: [Front facade to Lubin's nickeleon movie theater]
Description: Shows the front facade to one of the motion picture theaters built for Philadelphia motion picture entrepreneur Siegmund Lubin. The exterior of the theater is heavily decorated with architectural ornaments, predominately female figures. In the center, shows the ticket booth with a sign that reads, "Lubin's 5¢." There are four sets of double doors. Above the doors in the left is a sign reading, "Entrance to Theatre. Box Office" with a finger pointing left. An African American man, attired in a cap, a white collared shirt, tie, and suit jacket and pants, holds a broom and stands in between the first two sets of doors. A second broom leans against the wall beside him. In the left is a door that reads on the glass, "Filling's Wine Room." Adjacent building in the right has two visible signs, "Der Doo" and a partial view showing "Chinese" probably a Chinese restaurant. Der Doo (1874-1929?) emigrated from China to Baltimore in 1900. He opened Chinese restaurants in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Description: Tradecard containing a view of the three-and-one-half story beer hall and restaurant adorned with signage reading "G. Hartung Hotel." A patron enters the establishment as a man, probably the proprietor, stands near the entrance. A laborer emerges from the cellar holding a keg. Kegs and a case of liquor bottles line the sidewalk near a horse-drawn dray situated in the street for loading. Description: Racist trade card promoting the restaurant of Frank Tiefenthaler and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature with grotesque facial features. Shows the man, portrayed with a blank stare and attired in a striped, long-sleeved shirt, eating from several stacked bowls of "mush." He holds a spoonful of porridge close to his open mouth from within a wooden pantry. Illustration also shows the open door to the pantry. Tiefenthaler began to operate his restaurant from 216 North 9th Street in 1884. Description: Trade card promoting Elkhart Starch Company and depicting a racist genre scene of an African American waiter serving a white couple in a restaurant. Shows in the center of the image the couple seated at a table. In the left, the brown-haired woman, attired in a gray hat decorated with flowers and a red dress with white ruffles at the neck, sleeves, and at the bottom rests her left elbow on the table and holds a white fan. In the right, a man with brown hair and a mustache and attired in a brown jacket; a white collared shirt with a black bowtie; a cream-colored waistcoat; white pants with blue stripes; and black shoes, holds a paper labeled "Bill of Fare" in his right hand. He points his index finger at the woman with his left hand. The African American waiter, attired in a black jacket; a white collared shirt with a white bowtie; and white pants with a gold pocket watch chain stands behind the table. He carries a silver tray with two dishes, each with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. In the left background is an entryway with a red curtain. To the right of the doorway is a sideboard and a framed painting hangs above it. Image also includes, in the right, a hurricane chandelier and checkered flooring. A.L. Muzzy built the Muzzy & Sage Mill in Elkhart, Indiana in 1870. Albert R. Beardsley (1847-1924) purchased the mill in 1878 and founded the Elkhart Starch Company.
