Description: Seven boys pose in the midst of digging a ditch near the Schuylkill River. Across the river, smokestacks and industrial buildings are visible., Location: About 4 blocks bel. Gray's Ferry Bridge - Schuylkill River., Photographer's manuscript note on verso: Do you remember the story of the bloodthirsty buncaneers [sic] -- how they dug holes in the earth and buried their treasure, how your heart thumped with excitement as their doings were told or read. Perhaps you did not have an opportunity to dig holes for the purpose of burying or finding treasure. These youngsters have, and are in a way, exercising that privlidge [sic]. Hence what is lost in a cozy playroom, is found in the freedom of the outdoors. But these free lances are not burying or seeking gold. Truth to tell it was a bitter cold day and there was a high wind, so these pirates were engaged in digging fire holes in the side of the ditch, for the verry [sic] pratical [sic] purpose of arranging a set of ovens, firing them and so keeping warm. Title: Philadelphia fashions, spring & summer 1845, by S. A. & A. F. Ward no. 62 Walnut St
Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 16 elegantly attired men, women, and boys in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. A couple in bed coats sits on a chaise lounge. The man accompanied by a boy, attired in a military-style suit, talks to another man, wearing a suit with patterned pants. The woman talks with another lady attired in a bonnet, shawl, and full skirt. A third gentleman stands near two columns to the left. He wears a suit with a lavishly patterned vest and striped pants. On the opposite side of the columns, two women in evening dresses sit at a piano. One wears a feather in her hair and the other wears an elaborate up do with ringlettes on the side. Two men in evening suits join them. Furnishings also includes a framed painting and mosaic carpeting. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene. At the banks of a river, possibly the Schuylkill, 5 men, one woman, and a boy are gathered. The woman, at the center of the scene, wears a riding habit and sits side saddle on her horse. Her male companion, in a riding suit, stands next to her, dismounted from his horse. To the left, a man in a hunting outfit and with a dog stands between two men in suits and top hats. To the right, a man attired in an overcoat stands with a boy, attired in a suit. Each wears a top hat. All the men wear pants of various patterns and different styles of neckwear. Most carry a cane and the hunter holds a rifle. Most of the depicted men have some facial hair. Title: Life in Philadelphia. Dark conversation
Description: Circa 1833 racist caricature about the "disagreeableness" of the growing community of middle-class African Americans in Philadelphia. Depicts an African American man greeting an African American man-woman couple on a windy street corner, near the shop of a print dealer and where several fashionably-attired African American men and women are walking and standing. A river is visible below. In the left, the solitary man dressed in equestrian costume, including a white riding hat, green coat, and white ruffled shirt, holds a walking cane and comments about the "Black looking day." He extends a snuff box, with his ungloved left hand, to the man who is a part of the couple. The man, attired in a blue waistcoat and black pants, accepts the box with his ungloved right hand while holding a green umbrella under his left arm. He agrees about the stormy condition and that "De Blacks flying about so make it Petickly Disagreable." His woman partner, stands beside him and with her right hand under the elbow of his extended arm. She is attired in a white bonnet and a white shawl over a pink long-sleeved dress. She also wears white gloves, holds a black purse in her right hand, and her bonnet is adorned with a feather that blows in the breeze. Behind them, the African American men and women on promenade are similarly attired in waistcoats and pants; equestrian costume; and long-sleeved dresses and bonnets. Shadowy depictions of several prints are visible in the print dealer’s large display store window. Also shows in the far right, a river, bridge, and landscape.
