Title: Scenery on the Pennsylvania Railroad Album
Description: Album of photographs documenting the Philadelphia, Middle, and Pittsburgh divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad, incorporated in 1846. The consolidated company sought to build a trunk route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh through the Allegheny mountains in order to compete with the Erie Canal for freight traffic. In 1854, rail passage through the Alleghenies via the "Horse Shoe Curve" was achieved and spurred the establishment and growth of the several towns depicted along the route.

Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 16 elegantly attired men, women, and boys in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. A couple in bed coats sits on a chaise lounge. The man accompanied by a boy, attired in a military-style suit, talks to another man, wearing a suit with patterned pants. The woman talks with another lady attired in a bonnet, shawl, and full skirt. A third gentleman stands near two columns to the left. He wears a suit with a lavishly patterned vest and striped pants. On the opposite side of the columns, two women in evening dresses sit at a piano. One wears a feather in her hair and the other wears an elaborate up do with ringlettes on the side. Two men in evening suits join them. Furnishings also includes a framed painting and mosaic carpeting. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene. At the banks of a river, possibly the Schuylkill, 5 men, one woman, and a boy are gathered. The woman, at the center of the scene, wears a riding habit and sits side saddle on her horse. Her male companion, in a riding suit, stands next to her, dismounted from his horse. To the left, a man in a hunting outfit and with a dog stands between two men in suits and top hats. To the right, a man attired in an overcoat stands with a boy, attired in a suit. Each wears a top hat. All the men wear pants of various patterns and different styles of neckwear. Most carry a cane and the hunter holds a rifle. Most of the depicted men have some facial hair. Description: Racist trade card promoting wheelwrights the Goodwin Brothers and depicting caricatures of African Americans on a wooden barge “on the o high o,” i.e. Ohio River. Title: American Steel & Wire Company factory plant, Trenton, New Jersey
Description: Aerial views of the the American Steel and Wire Company plant. In 1848 John A. Roebling purchased a 25 acre site along the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Chambersburg (now a part of Trenton) for his wire rope business. Roebling designed the buildings and machinery and directed the company until his death in 1869, when his sons took over. The company manufactured wire rope and related products for suspension bridges, shipping, mining, construction (including the Panama Canal), electrical power transmission, cable cars, tramways, aircraft, submarine netting, musical instruments, elevators, logging and oil drilling. By World War I, the factory was the largest wire rope plant in the world and the company grew considerably in response to steadily increasing demands for its products. The company was a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Corporation. Description: Incomplete collection of the series, published by John Moran circa 1863, showing scenic views of the Allegheny Mountains and Conemaugh and Susquehanna rivers along the Pittsburgh division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The railroad (incorporated in 1846) traveled from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh through the mountain passage known as the "Horse Shoe Curve," completed in 1854.
