Title: Fairbank's rock cordials, positive cure for all lung disorders
Description: Trade card promoting Fisher and Fairbanks' patent medicine Fairbanks' Rock Cordials and depicting a racist caricature of an African American man chef in the galley of ship. Shows the man portrayed with exaggerated features and attired in a white chef's hat; a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows; a red vest with gold buttons; a white apron; blue pants; and black shoes. He stands holding a spoon in his right hand and with his left hand holds a bowl that is filled with an unidentifiable pink food over a barrel that is being used as a table. He smiles and looks to a blond-haired white girl in the right attired in a pink hat; a black choker; a red dress; a white pinafore; white stockings with red stripes; and black shoes. She carries a doll costumed in a matching outfit and leans to look at the chef mixing. In the foreground on the floor are a pan, a pot with a bowl on top of it, and a spoon. Title: Fixing a block-head to the Constitution or putting a wart on the nose of old ironsides
Description: Satire of President Andrew Jackson who is represented as a figurehead that is being placed on "Old Ironsides" (i.e. the ship "Constitution") by African American sailors. The white commander, attired in uniform with his back to the viewer, stands beside a bucket of grog and offers the sailors a "double allowance of grog." To the right, eight African American sailors, portrayed in racist caricature and speaking in the vernacular, hoist the figurehead up with ropes. In the left, two African American sailors steady the base of the figurehead with rope and one remarks, "...dey'd better run him up to the yard arm like dey do de pirate." The figurehead of Jackson, who was often criticized for his broad interpretation of the constitutional powers of the executive branch, holds a paper inscribed "My interpretation of the Constitution." In the right, a white man military fifer and a white man drummer play the "rogue's march" instead of "Hail Columbia." Cartoon references the event in July 2, 1834, when mariner Samuel W. Dewey decapitated the figurehead in the middle of the night. Description: Series of specimens, primarily for trade cards and labels, printed by the prominent Philadelphia lithographic firm. Subjects include fanciful, allegorical, and sentimental scenes and portraiture with women, children, and flowers; hunting and recreational scenes; international iconography; animals (dogs, horses, and an alligator clutching a Black baby in its jaws); political and military imagery, including President James Garfield; land and marinescapes; and mythological and fairy tale views. Collection also includes specimen without an imprint and probably printed by Harris showing a plantation scene with a white man, attired in a straw hat, a white collared shirt, white pants, and a sword on his waistband, placing his right hand on the shoulder of a barefooted Black man, attired in a straw hat, a white collared shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, and white pants that are torn at the bottom, who carries a hoe. They stand before a body of water surrounded by flowers and trees with the plantation in the background. Racist scene shows a white female angel with wings pouring packages of tobacco from a cornucopia to a group of men and women from various ethnic groups and nationalities, including Native Americans, Chinese, Spanish, and Middle Eastern people, many of which smoke cigars, hookahs, and pipes. Specimen depicting a man, attired in a turban with a dagger in his waistband, kneeling with a rifle beside him. Surrounding him are palms and desert plants. Description: Periodical illustration depicting the bustling market near the Camden Ferry and the Delaware River on Market Street below Water Street. Under the market shed, in the right, women peddlers sell their goods to the many milling customers. Under the adjacent canopy walkways, in the left, white men sailors and couples of men and women stroll and an African American man and woman couple argues. On the street, in the right background and center foreground, dockworkers deliver wheelbarrows of goods and a white woman peddler chases a dog stealing a fish. From the late 18th century, Philadelphia continually had a fish market below Water Street. Title: The shackle broken - by the genius of freedom
Description: Print containing a montage of vignettes and quotes supportive of African American civil rights centered around a scene of "Hon. Robert B. Elliott, of South Carolina, delivering his great speach [sic] on 'civil rights' in the House of Representatives, January 6, 1874" to the packed floor of white and African American Congressmen and balcony of spectators. Contains an American flag inscribed with the quote, "What you give to one class, you must give to all. What you deny to one class, you shall deny to all;" scenes of African American soldiers, officers, and sailors; statues of Lincoln holding his "Emancipation Proclamation" and Senator Charles Sumner holding his "Bill of Civil Rights;" and quotes referring to African American participation in the Civil War. Title: The people putting responsibility to the test or the downfall of the kitchen cabinet and collar presses
Description: Cartoon predicting the dire consequences to follow President Jackson's withdrawal of federal funds from the Bank of the United States. Depicts a riot in which Supreme Court Justice John Marshall warns that "the day of retribution is at hand" as anti-bank fiscal advisors Reuben Whitney and Thomas Ellicott use a rope to pull down a statue of Justice, depicted as a white woman holding scales and stepping on a snake, from a pedestal labeled "Constitution." An angry mob of white men farmers, laborers, and tradesmen carry instruments including axes, pitchforks, and shovels and papers labeled, “Broken Bank.” They fight and demand the recharter of the bank, shouting "Send back the deposites! Recharter the Bank!" and "Come back old responsibility." In the right, Jackson escapes on the back of "Jack Downing" cursing Postmaster General Kendall, "By the Eternal Major Downing; I find Ive been a mere tool to that Damn'd Amos [Kendall] and his set, the sooner I cut stick the better." Title: To the people of America, this engraving of "First in Peace," from the original painting, is respectfully dedicated, representing the arrival of General George Washington at the Battery, New York, April 23rd, 1789, previous to his inauguration as the first president of the United States of America, April 30, 1789
Description: Print after the design of painter Henry Brueckner of Washington's arrival by barge to New York (the nation's capital) for his inauguration depicting a large crowd welcoming the newly-elected president. Shows Washington, at the head of the barge, raising his hat to New York Governor George Clinton standing within a heavily decorated "Welcome" canopy on the wharf. Clinton stands next to his wife, daughters, and white men envoys, all finely attired. On the heavily-decorated barge, containing a red canopy, Washington is surrounded by white men envoys and oarsmen. The envoys are finely attired and the oarsmen wear matching tan suits and black caps adorned with ribbons. The ribbons contain the names of the U.S. states. Throngs of men, women, and child spectators stand along the wharf and upon sailing vessels on the river. Spectators include an African American man cheering with his hat in the air (right); white women in gowns; a white sailor hanging from a rope ladder attached to a ship (right); and an Indigenous man, woman, and baby seated in a canoe by the barge (center right).
