- Description
- Trade cards depicting specimens for cigar box labels and trimmings of George S. Harris & Sons. Shows No. 2151 "City cousin," No. 2126 "Mirth and beauty," and No. 2155 "First mate.""City cousin," depicts a young woman reclining against a bale of hay in a field. Above this scene are toiletries, perfumes, and a book of "Happy hour poems" wrapped in a ribbon. "Mirth and beauty" depicts a waist-length portrait of a young girl wearing a large plumed hat. "First mate" shows a sailor in his blue uniform at sea, gripping his straw hat in his right hand, and telescope in his left., George S. Harris opened his lithography business ca. 1847 at 119 North Fourth Street. In 1872, George Harris & Sons moved into a seven-story, "iron front" building erected for the company at 718-724 Arch Street, where they operated the largest lithographic firm in the city, with about 600 employees producing lithographic trade cards, labels for cans and cigar boxes, circulars, calendars and stamped envelopes for patrons worldwide., Not in Wainwright., Advertising text stamped on verso: Geo. - [J. Hartman's biscuit bakery, No. 90 Penn Street, Philadelphia]
- Description
- Advertisement showing the bakery house at 90 S. Wharves, i.e., 412 S. Delaware Avenue. Signage adorning the building advertises "Crackers, Sugar & Soda Biscuit, Pilot, Ship & Navy Bread Wholesale & Retail." Employees and patrons enter and exit the building past stacks of barrels and are visible through the open entranceways and receiving windows, climbing stairs, discussing business, and inspecting barrels. In front of the business, under a large store banner, a patron and clerk converse and employees load a horse-drawn cart with provisions. At the side of the building, a driver with a horse-drawn cart is stopped in the alley to receive a barrel to be hoisted down from the third floor of the bakery. Also shows a sailor standing at the opposite street corner, and in the distance, part of a docked square-rigged ship., Title supplied by cataloguer., Date from Poulson inscription on recto: Aug. 1847. - Description
- Floor plan showing the layout of departments at the exhibition organized to raise funds for the home for destitute and wounded Civil War veterans. Display sponsors include the Fire Department, First Presbyterian Church, "Women's Mission" and the Penn Relief Association as well as local neighborhoods, towns, and counties including West Philadelphia, Germantown, Montgomery County, Chester County, Bethlehem, and Jenkintown. Displays include fancy goods, china, photographs & albums, books, canned fruit and confectionery, hardware, sewing machines, dolls, silhouettes, and silver. Exhibition also provided a table for the fair periodical "The Knapsack," a fruit stand, donation table, refreshment saloon, smoking saloon, and ladies dressing room., Published in The Knapsack, October 24, 1865.
