Title: A disloyal British "subject"
Description: Civil War cartoon satirizing the awkward foreign relations between the United States and Great Britain caused by the royal proclamation of neutrality in 1861. The Queen issued the proclamation, which recognized the seceded states as having belligerent rights, in response to the Union blockades of Southern ports and its effect on international maritime trade and privateering. Consequently, the United States feared that Great Britain had acknowledged the Confederacy as an independent government. Shows John Bull and "Pat" on a dock discussing the sailor's enlistment in the Navy. Bull, the royal proclamation under his arm, warns the American that should he enlist with "either of the Belligerents" he would not be protected by Britain if taken as a pirate. "Pat" responds he does not want his protection and that the "stars and stripes" for which he fights will protect him. Title: Fixing a block-head to the Constitution or putting a wart on the nose of old ironsides
Description: Satire of President Andrew Jackson who is represented as a figurehead that is being placed on "Old Ironsides" (i.e. the ship "Constitution") by African American sailors. The white commander, attired in uniform with his back to the viewer, stands beside a bucket of grog and offers the sailors a "double allowance of grog." To the right, eight African American sailors, portrayed in racist caricature and speaking in the vernacular, hoist the figurehead up with ropes. In the left, two African American sailors steady the base of the figurehead with rope and one remarks, "...dey'd better run him up to the yard arm like dey do de pirate." The figurehead of Jackson, who was often criticized for his broad interpretation of the constitutional powers of the executive branch, holds a paper inscribed "My interpretation of the Constitution." Depicts the scene from the story set during the Mexican-American War aboard a sailing ship when the character Josh, an older Black man cabin hand, teaches a pig "to know their place"-- not to be on the quarter-deck--with scalding water. Description: Photographs of ten views of the Naval Parade on the Delaware River during the Peace Jubilee on October 25, 1898. The ships depicted are the Tug Philadelphia; Japanese cruiser Kasagi; Texas; Topeka; Columbia; Mayflower; Marblehead; New Orleans; Gloucester; and the Transports Panther and Olivette. The Japanese cruiser Kasagi is depicted with two engine stacks, lines of nautical and national flags, and Japanese flags flying on the masts. Depicts a riot in which Supreme Court Justice John Marshall warns that "the day of retribution is at hand" as anti-bank fiscal advisors Reuben Whitney and Thomas Ellicott use a rope to pull down a statue of Justice, depicted as a white woman holding scales and stepping on a snake, from a pedestal labeled "Constitution." The latter wears a bandage on his head and rests the right side of his head on his right hand. The white soldier holds up a sheet of paper inscribed "Honorable Discharge" to the winged figure. The white sailor sits across from the white soldier. His head and left arm are bandaged and crutches rest by his side. He extends his right hand and holds his cap out to the winged figure. The African American sailor, prone, and partially visible behind him, does the same. American flags, on their sides and their upper poles adorned with wreaths of garland, rest among the soldiers and sailors. Four allegorical female figures, two and two, flank the central figure. To her left, one holds a basket of bounty as the other (behind her) tosses wreathes of garland. To her right, one holds a pocket watch as the other (behind her) shoots lightning from her hand. In the left background, wreathes rain upon soldiers, some in bandages, who march and carry American flags. In the right background, lightning bolts strike an ironclad ship on open waters., The soldiers home chartered in 1862, opened in December 1863, and incorporated in 1864 was an outgrowth of the relief organization, the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. The founding relief organization provided hospital care, washing, sleeping, and writing facilities to military personnel, sailors, refugees, and free people during the war. The Soldiers Home was chartered with the mission of "the providing of a temporary or permanent Home for all persons who, while in the military service of the United States of America, either upon land or sea, shall become disable from wounds, or from sickness, so that they are unable to perform the ordinary avocations of life."
