Two children sit in the grass while another boy stands to the left. The Germantown Academy, a nonsectarian day school, was founded in 1759. The school had two headmasters at first, David James Dove for English-speaking students and Hilarius Becker for German-speaking students. The original schoolhouse with a prominent belfry was built in 1761. During the Revolutionary War, the school was used as a hospital and camp for the British.
