- Glass negative showing Germantown Academy, a two-story stone building with a steeple. In front of the building is a line of trees, a lawn, a metal fence and a road. Two children sit in the grass while another boy stands to the left. The Germantown Academy, a nonsectarian day school, was founded in 1759. The school had two headmasters at first, David James Dove for English-speaking students and Hilarius Becker for German-speaking students. The original schoolhouse with a prominent belfry was built in 1761. During the Revolutionary War, the school was used as a hospital and camp for the British. - Handbill containing a view of the boy's boarding school built in 1804 for brothers John Thomas and Charles Carre at Heart Lane and Nicetown Lane, between Germantown and Frankford. School property includes landscaped lawns, a barn, and trees. A man approaches the entrance of the school where a woman waits at the door. Pupils are visible in the first floor windows. Also contains several paragraphs signed by administrator Samuel S. Griscom describing the school, including location, "Course of Instruction," "Terms for Tuition," and the school philosophy in addition to names of references. - Description
- Exterior view of the small two-and-one-half story school house, renamed the "Levering Primary School" in 1847. Shows the side and front of the building also used as a public hall. A gated pathway and fence are visible next to the school house. A large tree stands in the front yard. The school was rebuilt again in 1857. - Exterior view of north flank of house known for the plaster-of-Paris model of a ship on the lower gable of the house. Includes three women standing in front of the house, with two baby carriages. Original portion of house built circa 1760. In the rear of the property was the first public hall in Germantown. The Germantown Fire Company housed a small engine known as the "Bull Dog" on the property. Kept as a hotel until 1836, when James Ford purchased the property and opened a boarding school for girls.
