Title: Interior view of George G. Evans' original gift book establishment. 439 Chesnut [sic] Str. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement depicting a view looking toward the rear of the busy store. Shows bookcases filled with texts mounted atop cabinets and drawers lining the walls. Stacks of books and eight busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a "Gifts" case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. The booth, enclosed with ornate white iron work, contains advertising text that reads "A Gift with Each Book Sold at Retail Price." Title: Is yo' sho' lady when I wears dese stockings I won' fin' ma laigs all black
Description: Racist caricature reminiscent of the plate "Have you any flesh coloured silk stockings...?" from E.W. Clay's racist satiric series, Life in Philadelphia, originally published in the late 1820s and early 1830s. Depicts an African American man dressed as a woman attired in a brimmed hat, a long-sleeved dress tied with a bow at the back, a fur shawl, shoes, and with a closed umbrella and a basket at her feet. She sits in front of the counter of a dry goods store and inquires in the vernacular about a pair of dark stockings which she holds. A young white woman sales clerk smiles with her elbows on the counter and displays to the customer a second pair of dark-colored stockings. Bolts of fabric rest on shelves behind the clerk, and socks and hosiery hang above. Title: City Marble Works and Steam Mantel Factory. Corner Tenth and Vine Streets Philadelphia. J.E. & B. Schell

Title: Melloy & Ford, wholesale tin ware manufacturers
Description: Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates," "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements, including a large scale model of a coffee pot, contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a white man and woman couple strolls, two white laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a woman customer enters the store.
