Title: Philadelphia Wigwam for the Johnson Union Convention held August 14th 1866
Description: Exterior view of the temporary convention hall built opposite Girard College between 21st and 22nd streets on Girard Avenue for the first national political convention after the Civil War. The convention was organized to foment the National Union Party in support of President Johnson and in opposition to the reconstruction policies passed by "radical" Republicans in Congress. Crowds of men and women enter the several front and side entrances as a horse-drawn street car passes by. The hall containing galleries, a stage, and amphitheatre was built to hold about 10,000 persons. The National Union Party existed 1864-1868., Copyrighted by G.S. Title: [Peace Jubilee, grand viewing stands in front of the Mercantile Club, 1422-26 North Broad Street.]
Description: Depicts people sitting and standing underneath of the wooden viewing stands erected along Broad Street for the Peace Jubilee, a celebration of the end of the Spanish American War held in 1898. Included a military parade that passed through a Court of Honor and Triumphal Arch, along with other festivities that lasted several days in October. The word "Victory" is painted on the sides of a wooden tower that rises from the section of the stands in front of the Mercantile Club, built on North Broad Street in 1892 after designs by Baker & Dallett. Title: St. George's Hall. N.W. [sic] 13th & Arch Sts
Description: Exterior view of the north front and east flank of St. George's Hall built in 1835 by Thomas Walter Ustick as a residence for railroad executive Matthew Newkirk. Converted to the headquarters of the Society of the Sons of St. George in 1876, whose mission was to assist Englishmen in distress in America. The statue of St. George slaying the dragon on top of the front portico is partially visible. Includes numerous pedestrians crossing the street, the rear of a delivery wagon in the foreground and in the background, the tower of City Hall. Description: View looking south at the front elevation of the residence built in 1835 after designs by Thomas Walter Ustick for railroad executive Matthew Newkirk at the southwest corner of Thirteenth and Arch streets. Shows the building before it was physically converted to the headquarters of the Society of the Sons of St. George in 1876, which included adding a third floor and a statue of St. George slaying the dragon over the front portico. Also includes a horse-drawn coach traveling west on Arch Street in the foreground and trolley tracks in the cobblestone street.
