Built by Newsham & Rag in England, it was brought to the United States in 1764 for the Middle Ward Fire Company of Germantown. The engine worked by both gathering water from wells and propeling water onto fires. It was in use up until 1822, when the Fellowship Fire Company deemed it too antiquated for use. Description: Active street scene at Sixth and Walnut streets with a view of the Walnut Street Jail, completed in 1776, after the designs of Philadelphia architect Robert Smith. Depicts several individuals, including a child, lining Sixth Street witnessing a large wood shed on wheels, possibly the first edifice of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, being moved by a team of horses. A dog runs in the street and another sits next to a spectator in the right foreground. The prison closed and was razed in 1835, the prisoners relocated to Moyamensing Prison. Title: The gold & silver artificers of Phila. In civic procession 22 Feb 1832
Description: Event lithograph showing the gold and silver artificers of Philadelphia on procession past the Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) for the centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington. Government officials and prominent citizens led the parade order, followed by the tradesmen, then the volunteer fire companies, and lastly the military. Shows the craftsmen, all attired in top hats and sashes, led by a parade marshall on horse-back. He is followed by a six-horse mounted team pulling a float carrying men operating and protecting a coin press. Two other men, probably the marshall's aids, on horseback, one on a rearing horse, flank the rear of the vehicle. Several rows of marching artisans follow the float led by an artificer carrying a large banner adorned with a bust portrait of Washington. The portrait is encircled by a wreath and bordered by an eagle that clasps a banner in his beak reading "Pater Patriae" [design on distributed coin]. Along the parade route, throngs of spectators watch from the steps of the bank, along the street, and from the second floor windows of businesses adjacent to the financial institution. Signage for "Thomas Fletcher, Manufacturer of Silver Plate and Jewelry"; "Fletcher & Gardiner"; and "Browne & Robb 132" adorn the storefronts. Merchandise is displayed in the windows of Fletcher & Gardiner. Spectators along the street include well-attired men, women, and children, including several boys who run to and gather in front of the float to retrieve freshly pressed coins being thrown from the vehicle. Many raise their arms and retrieve coins from the ground. Title: Hibernia Fire Engine company, No. 1, of Philadelphia Instituted 1752. Assembling for parade, October 5th 1857
Description: View showing members of the volunteer fire company gathering by their hand-powered Philadelphia-style fire engine (built 1843 by John Agnew) in front of their firehouse (built 1852) on Evelina Street between Second, Third, Walnut and Chestnut streets. The members, including company president Colonel James Page, wear their full regalia of hats, capes, and belts. Many of the men also carry horns and a hatchet. A few spectators informally watch the gathering. Women and couples peer from the windows of a neighboring building and boys sit on the brick wall of the courtyard attached to the fire house. The four-story firehouse is painted with a large "1" on the side and friezes are marked with the institution and incorporation dates, 1752 and 1840, respectively of the company. Also shows the company hose truck on the sidewalk and the station dog lying beside the ornately decorated engine. The engine contains painted details including eagles, angels, harps, and the figure of Liberty. On October 5, 1857, over one hundred regional volunteer fire companies participated in the Firemen's Parade that processed through Philadelphia with John F. Gibson as chief marshal.
