- Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone. The firm, established in 1859, was active under the name Stein & Jones, until the death of Stein in 1871 and its reestablishment as Jones & Potsdamer., Not in Wainwright., Philadelphia on Stone, POSA 91, See also variant uncolored proof with registration marks pasted on page 92. - Commissioners Hall, Spring Garden
- Description
- Exterior view of the hall containing the district's police station and Mayor's office completed in 1848 after the designs of William L. Johnston at Spring Garden and North Thirteenth streets. Shows the Greek-Revival style building, the largest of the commissioners' halls buildings, adorned with an American flag and including a steeple built by Jacob Berger with a clock made by T. Tyson. Also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including strolling couples, a man on horseback, and a horse-drawn street car. Prior to the city's consolidation with bordering townships in 1854, neighborhoods maintained and housed their own police stations, mayors, and other government officials in commissioners' halls, including Spring Garden. - Description
- Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. A man stands with his arms crossed in the side door, a couple strolls arm in arm, and three men stand and converse at the foot of the stairs of the engine house entrance. Includes a canalboat (named the Captain T.M. Scott, after the artist) on the river, along with a partial view of the water basin of the waterworks lined by a fence in the background. The waterworks, completed circa 1845 after the designs of engineer William E. - Advertisement containing an ornamental border, vignette examples of Kollner's work, and several lines of advertising text for the collaboration between Camp and Kollner at the Phonenix Block circa 1849-1851. Vignettes, marked with variant Kollner imprints, include General Washington, accompanied by two of his officers, and dismounted from a horse that is managed by a black handler (Servant William Lee?); a line drawing of the Phoenix Block building; the back of an old man, possibly Franklin, dressed in colonial attire, and seated at his secretary; and a view showing a grand building, probably a Capitol, along a river on which vessels sail. Border also includes vignettes. Vignettes depict a military scene with an officer on horseback accompanied by another soldier on the shore of an ocean on which a ship sails; and a trade scene between a gentleman and a Native American reviewing a stack of goods of commerce at a pier. Advertisement also contains depictions of female allegorical figures representing probably Spring and Fall flanking two ornamented poles entwined with banners. The banners are marked with the subject matter and types of prints issued by the partners, including "Portraits, Landscapes, Animals, taken from life.
