Description: Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone. Description: Oblique view of the front and north flank of the one-and-a-half story granite engine house at the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties Water Works (later known as the Schuylkill Water Works) at the foot of Thompson Street on the east bank of the Schuylkill River. In the foreground, an empty horse-drawn cart is stopped near a pump, where a man fills a bucket with water. Title: Portraits
Description: Bound volume of portrait plates issued between circa 1804 and 1831 from various publications, including "Mechanics Magazine"; "New British Lady's Magazine"; and the compilation "Boxiana or Sketches of Antient [sic] and Modern Pugilism" (London: George Virtue, 1829). Portraits depict prominent and celebrity European figures, predominantly from Great Britain, including clergymen, legislators, entertainers, scientists and inventors, royalty and pugilists. Plates include full-length, half-length, and bust-length portraiture, with some containing backgrounds, props, or ornate borders. Portraits of religious figures predominantly published by London publishers F. Westley and Westley & Davis and arranged in alphabetical order by sitter's name. Portraits of legislators, celebrity and other prominent figures predominantly published by London publishers Fisher Son & Co. and J. Robins & Co. and arranged in alphabetical order by sitter's name. Portraits of pugilists predominantly published by G. Smeeten and Sherwood, Jones & Co. and most arranged in alphabetical order by sitter's name.
