- Philadelphia, April 15, 1861. To the president of the United States The unparalleled event of the past week has revealed to the citizens of the United States, beyond question or possibility of doubt, that a peaceful reconciliation under the form of our Constitution, is repelled and scorned, and that secession means, in the hearts of its supporters, both treason and war against our country and nation. We, therefore, the undersigned, loyal citizens of the United States and inhabitants of the city of Philadelphia, responding to the proclamation of the president of the United States, hereby declare our unalterable determination to sustain the government in its efforts to maintain the honor, the integrity and the existence of our national union

[4]., "Every loyal man in the U.S. Militia, Army and Navy, is entitled to one copy gratis, from the War- and Navy-Departments. By William Beschke."; the fourth page has the words only to the six numbered songs., William Beschke, the inventor of the breech-loading cannon, was a staunch supporter of the Union cause and published this broadside as a diatribe against Jeff Davis. - Has the war ruined the country? The Copperheads assert that the war has ruined the country; that we can never pay our debt; and that the war has proven a failure. Look at these diagrams, based on official records, and see if this is true. ... Our prosperity has continued to increase in spite of the war, and the moment it is ended we shall go ahead in wealth and power with a rapidity hitherto unknown to any nation on the face of the globe. Is not such a nation able to carry on a war for its own salvation?

- New England fanaticism Who are the real disunionists? In a speech at Framingham, Massachusetts, July 4th, 1863, Wendell Phillips, now the great apostle of abolition, said, "The Union without liberty (to the negroes,) is tenfold to-day more accursed than it was any time the last quarter of a century. ... The Rev. Dr. Tyng, at a meeting of thre Freedmen's Relief Society, New York November 9th, 1863, said, "No gradual emanipcation now. No compensated emanicpation now Now put the axe to the root of the tree, and down with it--down with it." ... Horace Greely, before any state had attempted to go out of the Union, said, "If the cotton states, unitedly and earnestly, wish to withdraw peacefully from the Union, we think they should and would be allowed to do so. ... In "Helper's impending crisis," published in 1860, a book that was recommended by the present Secretary of State, will be found (pages 155-6,) these words: "No Union with slaveholders; ineligibility of slaveholders to office; no recognition of pro-slavery men, except as ruffians, outlaws, and criminals."
