Description: Side view of a life-size carving of an Indian wearing a headdress and standing on a box advertising "Coca Cola in bottles". This, in turn, has a base under it advertising Lipschutz's 44 cigars. The figure stands in front of the door of the corner store which also advertises school supplies and Supplee Ice Cream. Thos. A. McKernan is the proprietor. At curbside is parked a massive truck delivering Supplee Ice Cream. North Second Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half story warehouse operated by Frederick Foering and C.A. Thudium at 87 North Second Street. In the open entranceways, a clerk assists a female shopper and an African American laborer lifts a stove. Displays of stoves line the sidewalk and the store walls. On the second floor near open windows, white laborers work. A horse-drawn cart departs an adjoining exitway. Foering and Thudium, one of the city's first domestic stove manufacturers, started in business in 1828, and operated on North Second Street from 1845 until 1847.

Title: Elevation plan of Granite St. buildings and those connecting with Walnut, Dock and Front Streets
Description: Depicts three rows of elevations showing the basic architectural stylings of the twenty-three distinct Granite Street properties constructed by John Rice for Jesse Godley between 1849 and 1853. The first two rows show the front elevations of the north and south sides of Granite Street extending from Front to Dock Streets (100-127 Granite Street). The third row shows the east and west side elevations of Granite Street, including the underground storage vaults below the street and the front elevations of properties facing Front, Dock and Walnut Streets (200 block of South Front Street; 137-143 Dock Street; 100 block of Walnut Street). The plans include pre-consolidation property numbers; notes about properties that extend, and are accessible, from both Granite Street and Front, Walnut and Dock Streets; and pedestrian traffic, including laborers rolling barrels on the sidewalk, horse-drawn carts, and men and women walking on the sidewalks. Godley financed the "Granite Street Improvements" in anticipation of an increase in trade that the Central Railroad would bring to the area. Builders include John Rice, stone masons Lukens & Hutchinson, brick workers George R. Creely, and granite workers S.K. Hoxie, John C. Leiper, and William Keys. The innovative granite-covered storage vaults, twenty-four feet wide by three-hundred twenty-five feet long, were built under the street with a brick-arch arcade and for the joint use of tenants. Description: View of the ironwork manufactory, known as the Philadelphia Ornamental Iron Works, at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Building adorned with a large cast iron statue of Henry Clay on its roof and signage advertisng "Iron Railings Vernadahs, Balconies, Counters, &c." Also shows neighboring businesses including F.R. Description: Print trimmed and lacking caption., Poulson's inscription on recto: Mar. 1849; Market Street., Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates", "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements including a large scale model of a coffee pot contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a couple strolls, two laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a female customer enters the store. An African American peddler with tray and bell passes a line of crates on the sidewalk. Tinsmiths work near the third floor windows. Melloy & Ford, a partnership established in 1849, was in business until 1861 when Melloy entered partnership with Isaac Smith at the same address.

Title: Lacey & Phillips
Description: Advertisement depicting William N. Lacey's and Samuel R. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. The South Fifth Street address was damaged by fire in 1854 and the firm relocated to larger facility at 14 and 16 South Seventh street in 1855. Lacey died in 1860 and the firm was renamed S.R. Phillips Company. Title: Melloy & Ford, wholesale tin ware manufacturers
Description: Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story manufactory operated by John M. Melloy and Robert Ford at 291 Market Street, later renumbered 723, promoting the "lowest rates," "quick sales & small profits," and "metallic roofing." The building heavily adorned with signage and product advertisements, including a large scale model of a coffee pot, contains prominent displays of tinware in the shop window, on the store shelves, and near the open cellar door. Near the front of the shop, a white man and woman couple strolls, two white laborers lift a crate onto a horse-drawn sulky, and a woman customer enters the store. An African American man peddler with tray and bell passes a line of crates on the sidewalk. Tinsmiths work near the third floor windows. Title: Penn Hotel & Denny's harness shop
Description: Advertisement depicting the three-and-a-half-story building containing the hotel and tavern operated by John Thompson at 329 Market Street and Robert Denny's saddles and harness store at 327 1/2 Market Street. Harnesses and other horse paraphernalia hang from the shop's display window and entranceways, including a stable entrance marked, "Entertainment for Horses." In front of the building, a white man with his horse enters the marked entrance; a white man clerk from Denny's converses with a white man customer by a stack of trunks; and other horses rest nearby and in front of the adjacent hardware store, including one attached to a sulky attended by an African American man. Hotel guests stand near the second floor windows and enter the hotel entrance. Description: View of the prominent hotel erected in 1868 at 1500-1506 Chestnut Street. White men and women pedestrians stroll the sidewalk, and an African American man passes by on his horse-drawn cart. Businesses line Chestnut Street, including: George E. Dearborn, piano dealer; a paper hangings store; and a custom shirt proprietor. The hotel, named after the previously existing "Colonnade Row" of early nineteenth-century pillared, porched townhouses, was demolished in 1925 for the erection of the Franklin Trust Company building. Contents include illustrated newspaper, periodical, and guidebook clippings describing prominent city landmarks, including cemeteries, benevolent institutions, and churches; columns reporting about city improvements; reports, lists, and statistics about mortality rates, market prices, and sheriff and real estate sales; and editorial and public interest stories related to local politics and mores, prominent trades, social events, municipal services, and city demographics. Subjects include the new Masonic Hall (history of the local organization, dedication ceremony, and description of building); the history and demolition of the second building of the Chestnut Street Theatre; the centennial anniversary of the Pennsylvania Hospital; the state of local trades, including Jules Hauel & Co.’s perfumery, the soda water business, "plaster images," lithography (P. S. Duval, p. 24), preserves and pickling (Jacob L.
