His brothers Benjamin, Edward, and John were also artists, and for a short time in the 1840s, Richard shared a Philadelphia studio with Edward and John and taught art. He also supported himself by preparing technical illustrations for some of Philadelphia's scientific organizations. Like his brothers, Benjamin and Edward, Richard served as a topographical draftsman on expeditions to the western United States. He was killed by Native Americans in Utah.

Description: View of the Zoar Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African American congregation within the organized structure of United Methodism, founded in 1794. The church, with a for sale sign, stands between a livery stable and C.W. Kramer's light carriage and wagon factory. Pedestrians, including African Americans, stand on the sidewalk. Contains two boxes of text below and above the image inscribed: "Zoar M.E. Church, Founded 1791, Rebuilt 1838" and "This church propt. for sale. Lot 50 x 190. Apply to F. Snyder, N.W. Description: Glass negative showing a view Bruner & George Livery at 5434 Germantown Avenue, a two-story stone building. Trolley tracks line the brick road in front of the building. A second two-story building on the right has a blacony on the third floor and a fence extending from the right side. A sign that reads "Bruner & George Livery & Boarding Stables" hangs on the side wall between the buildings. Bruner and George were a livery and boarding stables in Germantown, Philadelphia owned by Henry B. Bruner and Riter W. George. The business existed from circa 1858 to circa 1918. This property was owned by William Ashmead, a wagon manufacturer, after the American Revolution.
