Description: Glass negative showing exterior view from Independence Square of the Philadelphia Dispensary's third building, built in 1801, at 127 South Fifth Street, with partial views of adjacent buildings including the Mercantile Library building (125 South Fifth Street), occupied by the American Bank Note Company at the time of this photograph, and the offices of F. After renting properties near Chestnut and Strawberry streets, the Dispensary constructed its own out-patient clinic at 127 South Fifth Street in 1801. The plan of the Dispensary shows a “Prescribing Room,” an apothecary shop, and a room for patients on the ground floor, and a Manager’s Room, Library, and three bedrooms on the second floor. Description: Derived from a print created by J.C. Wild in 1832, this view looks west from the intersection of Third, Walnut and Dock Streets and depicts the Merchant's Exchange constructed 1832-33 after the designs of Philadelphia architect William Strickland for the Philadelphia Exchange Company. Includes street and pedestrian traffic concentrated near the business center and the City Railroad tracks. Many horse-drawn omnibuses, including the Spruce Street, Navy Yard, West Philadelphia and Fifth Street lines, arrive and depart. He returned to Philadelphia, went into business with his future son-in-law William Rau in 1875, and was active in the photography community until his death in 1910.
