- Glass negative showing a group of men from the classes of 1888 and 1889 gathered in a field at Haverford College (founded 1833) to participate in the cane rush. Most of the men wear jackets and hats as they cluster together looking toward something in the center of their circle. The cane rush was an annual event where sophomores and freshman would fight to put the most hands on a cane. - Elm tree at Haverford [College], between Founder's & Barclay Halls. A sapling from the Penn Treaty Elm
- Description
- Glass negative showing a slender elm tree with bare branches. Four male students gather in the field surrounding the tree. This elm is a relative of the tree under which William Penn met with Lenape Chief Tamanend in 1682 to pledge a treaty of friendship. The original tree fell in 1810, but cuttings survived.
