Designed by Edwin Forrest Durang at 1003 Arch Street, the theater burned down and was rebuilt or altered several times within the first two decades, at some point losing the free-standing wreathed lyre above the cornice shown here c. 1870. It operated under a succession of at least nine different names until settling on the Trocadero in 1896, at which time the stage mainly showcased burlesque and vaudeville groups. Description: Exterior view of Robert Fox's theater built in 1870 on the former Chestnut Street site of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A lightbulb sign spelling "Family Resort" hangs over the arched entranceway, which is flanked by ground floor shops. Two men stand on the roof, one story above the street, next to a sculpture adorned by an eagle, a clock and two light standards. In this view, dated c. 1870, the faces of Comedy and Tragedy rest atop the cornice, while a large clock topped with an eagle ornaments the forward-projected entryway, flanked by playbills advertising “The Brigands.” The interior featured seats for 1,656 people and box seats designed in a fishbowl shape. The Chestnut Street Opera House began operating out of the theater in 1880 and became a leading venue in the city. Title: Eleventh St. Opera House Philada
Description: View from Girard Street (i.e., Ludlow Street) looking east at the front facade of the theater at the southeast corner of Eleventh and Marble Streets (i.e., Ludlow Street). The front facade of St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church (19 South Tenth Street) is partially visible in the left background and the corner dwelling at the southwest corner of Eleventh and Girard Streets is visible in the foreground. A horse stands unhitched on the side of the road. The opera house opened as "The Lyceum" by H.S. Cartee in 1854 in the building constructed for the First Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1818 and altered to a theater ca. 1854. Cotton & Dixey succeeded Cartee after one season and called the theater the "Eleventh Street Opera House." Ownership changed again the following season in 1856 to Samuel S. Sanford, who renamed it the "New American Opera House" and remained for several years until the theater was leased to Carncross & Dixey, who managed it at the time of this photograph. Description: Watercolor showing a view of the ruins of the National Theatre built in 1837 at 824-836 Chestnut Street, which was razed by fire on July 5, 1854. Shows partial fragments of the brick walls left standing. A broadside or poster is pasted on a fragment of the brick wall in the center. Bricks and debris are visible on the ground. The fire also destroyed the neighboring Philadelphia Museum known as the Chinese Museum built circa 1836-1838 after the designs of Isaac Holden at Ninth and Sansom Streets. Housed in two phase boxes, including binding and index., Robert Newell, the prominent Philadelphia commercial photographer operated a studio from circa 1855 to 1900. His firm, which originally specialized in portraiture, later focused on "Artistic Business and Landscape Photographs" and was reorganized as R. Newell & Son circa 1872. In 1876, the studio (Robert and Henry Newell) issued a series of six viewbooks under the title "Old Landmarks & Relics of Philadelphia." Newell also produced series of stereographs during the 1860s depicting commercial streets, the volunteer fire companies, and views of Fairmount Park and local cemeteries, as well as invented acid proof photographic ware in the 1870s.

Title: Views of Philadelphia
Description: Collection of prints from the various editions and restrikes of Birch's "Views of Philadelphia," originally published in 1800 as The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America; as it appeared in the year 1800. Four editions of the views, purchased through subscription and totaling 44 unique plates including a map of the city and title page with vignette, were published by William Birch in Philadelphia from 1800 until 1828. First and largest edition contained 29 plates, the pictorial views drawn by Thomas Birch and engraved by Samuel Seymour between 1798 and 1800; with the map and title page executed by script engraver William Barker. Bookseller Robert Campbell is listed as a seller on many of these plates, but appears to have been disassociated with the project before publication of the bound volume. Second edition of 22 plates was published in 1804. Third edition of 14 plates was published in 1809. Fourth edition of 12 plates was published between 1827 and 1828. The first and second edition were printed by Philadelphia printer, Richard Folwell. The later editions, predominately completed by William Birch alone, contained reissues of selected plates from the first edition as well as new engravings of prominent city structures erected after 1800. In the 1840s restrikes of five plates were produced by bookseller Robert Desilver, and in the 1860s, twelve by the antiquarian John McAllister, Jr; many of the restrikes originally published in the fourth edition. Collection also contains the second edition copper plate of the Bank of Pennsylvania, and the fourth edition copper plate of The Late Theatre in Chestnut Street., Series of late 18th and early 19th-century views of principal sections of the city of Philadelphia including primary streets, government buildings, local landmarks, and financial, religious, educational, and benevolent institutions. The series, the first of its kind in the United States, was created to attract new citizens and to illustrate to an international audience the vitality of the nation's premiere city. The views focus on structures, but also contain lively depictions of daily street life in Philadelphia.
